Did you happen to catch the StoryCorps on NPR this morning?
Meeting J.D. Salinger

They made us read Silas Marner in High School. It is the second worst book I have ever read and I read probably 200-300 books a year.

I have no recollection of the lessons it was supposed to be teaching Me. All i remember is it sucking soooooo badly.

Incidentally the worst book I almost read was Ulysses. I have tried 3 times to read it. I remain convinced that no one has ever actually read the whole thing...:)

I have read most of Salinger and I find him interesting. I think perhaps the mystique over shadows the writing though

Oh God! "Silas Marner!" Another journey into narcolepsey!

Thanks for sharing.

The rest of us will look forward to seeing what Salinger has been writing for the past 50 years.

And there you go again!  Where do you get the overweening arrogance to presume that I haven’t read other works by Salinger or enjoyed them?

Were you born a pompous asshole or is it something that you have had to work at over the years?

Don’t bother answering because I already know that it will be a snide, “I’m so superior to you,” ego stroking, pile of bullshit.

Musicmystery -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/29/2010 11:37:51 AM)

Geez, Marc.

Going from the last few posts, if this is typical of you, I probably am.

You've only mentioned a single work, which you panned.

It's a Salinger thread. What works did you read and enjoy? You might share that.

'Cuz it's a Salinger thread.

Fuckin' Panda.... can't even start a nice J.D. Salinger thread.

Bastard!

Salinger would have appreciated the conflict.

Panda's just hoping Salinger wrote a nice Western somewhere in there, and that it will be made into a classic film...

[;)]

Larry McMurtry already wrote the Salinger Western that was turned into a classic film - "The Last Picture Show!"

Scheherazade67 -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/29/2010 9:26:24 PM)

I can't say he'll be missed because he hasn't the most prolific writer.

On the other hand, it can't be denied that he is one of the most important writers of the last century.

mistresskimana -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/29/2010 9:37:48 PM)

He was my friend, i was able to talk with him over the years there is presently at least 40 more books he has finished..... sadly i am saying this conflict in this Thread would have made him yell at you like you were a piece of cow shit.... his home is so beautiful inside and out.... he had a few pets so i wonder who those are going to?

RIP My dearest Author pal JD Salinger

Musicmystery -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/30/2010 9:07:14 AM)

40 books? Really?

NPR reported that he had indeed finished works, that he has left instructions as to which should be published as they are and which should be edited. But 40?!

Way cool.

Jeffff -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/30/2010 9:13:11 AM)

I hope the instructions are clearly spelled out. If not this could get tied up for YEARS in court.

LOL at "would have made him yell at you like you were a piece of cow shit".... I'm assuming he did not care for arguing?

And, him befriending a domme.....causes a question to arise. [;)]

Lastly; how do we know you're not just pulling our leg?

Musicmystery -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/30/2010 6:16:16 PM)

I raised an eyebrow at "over the years" from a 24 year old, but no matter.

The sniping's no fun, and whatever new Salinger books there are will be interesting to see.

In particular, I'm interested in how his voice and views have progressed over the past five decades.

Jeffff -> RE: So Long, J. D. Salinger (1/30/2010 6:26:30 PM)

I drank with Hemingway in Havana. Oh, the stories I could tell.

Yes. I'd read whatever is published by him now, but I tell you, the thought of him having perhaps written a sequel to Catcher, especially many, many years down the road, is going through my head. I'd love to see it.

I hear you; the time I spent drinking and whoring with Henry Miller in Paris was quite meaningful for me, as well. [:D]

While I hate Catcher In The Rye with a passion, I will check out his short stories with an open mind. I might like them.

I believe you, Jeff.

Some say you lie--I say you have a gift for fiction.

Jeff and Level,
seems you are both a lot older than I thought!

Bah! You guys don't know fun until you have gone on a pub crawl with John Norman.

I knew Jeff was when he knew the original Deep Purple album off the top of his head.

I think it was Level who was singing "Coming through the Rye" one day, and J.D. said "Hey! I'm gonna use that!" and got writing right away. Interesting stuff too. We all just watched:

I have a feeling that you're riding for some kind of a terrible, terrible fall. But I don't honestly know what kind.... It may be the kind where, at the age of thirty, you sit in some bar hating everybody who comes in looking as if he might have played football in college. Then again, you may pick up just enough education to hate people who say, 'It's a secret between he and I.' Or you may end up in some business office, throwing paper clips at the nearest stenographer. I just don't know.

This fall I think you're riding for - it's a special kind of fall, a horrible kind. The man falling isn't permitted to feel or hear himself hit bottom. He just keeps falling and falling. The whole arrangement's designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn't supply them with. Or they thought their own environment couldn't supply them with. So they gave up looking. They gave it up before they ever really even got started.

Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be.
