When I was four, my father took me to the circus - I had to be evacuated out of there because the clowns gave me such a horrible trip. They were tall, they smelled of melted stale makeup and sweat, and they focused all their attention on us, the powerless little kids. I hated them: I felt very threatened by them, and my child intuition told me they weren't very nice people. This episode marked me for life and I still don't like clowns to this day: thanks a LOT, Lucy [:D] .

I won't look. I am deathly afraid of clowns too. I am not sure what the genesis of the fear. I do know that the Stephen King book and movie IT contributed to it, as well as there being something very seedy and nefarious about clowns..sort of like serial killers in hiding. My mom is an artist and she painted a huge clown painting. When my brothers and I were little, we used to think the clown's eyes were following us whenever we passed the living room. To this day I hate them.

Not afraid of them but a note on Stephen King's IT. I used to have the recording on VHS and one time I was reading the book. I could not finish it because it scared the crapola out of my and I am an adult!

IT, was the one and only book ever to give me repeated nightmares, but it wasnt the clown so much, but the tv version...meh. I know many who have a clown phobia and in a bad way..and not something I take lightly which is why I warned.

Coulrophobia is abnormal or exaggerated fear of clowns. The term is common, but it does not appear to be used in psychology.It is common among children, but is also sometimes found in teenagers and adults as well. It can also be the effect of seeing a sinister portrayal of one in the media, such as the monster that took on the disguise of a clown in Stephen King's novel and film It. Coulrophobia can also be said to extend to a fear of covering up one's face with paint—the idea of hiding recognisable features under a layer of facepaint can also unsettle coulrophobia sufferers. Symptoms of coulrophobia can be shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, dreadfulness. In July 2006 the Bestival, a three-day music festival held in England, had to withdraw a request to festival goers to come dressed as clowns due to the unexpectedly high rate of coulrophobia among the potential audience.

Seriously, Tim Curry as Pennywise the evil clown was so damn good, I also have nightmares thinking of him, those yellow teeth and that laugh...................................runs screaming from the room.

I know, spiders and clowns...a killer combo of the stuff nightmares are made of!!! I am not kidding you, I get hysterical when I see a clown, there is a guy here with a clown avatar and I had to block it. Now, I am also afraid of rabbits....no clue why other than another 70's B film called Night of the Lepus. Also, they seem to be rats with ears. And there is always the killer rabbit in Donnie Darko.... I know, I am totaly weird....

How about the killer hare in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? During roleplaying on the Yahoo chatrooms years ago, someone will come on as the rabbit and all of us pretended to be afraid of him. Was worth a couple of chuckles back then.

Spiders totally:) I get terribly excited by Tim Curry even as a clown, yummy but IT the book only made me yep unsettled enough to give me spider nightmares, it was a psychological cauldron that book, bloody great one tho

Ohhhhhh...I forgot about the Monty Python one!! I was not as scared of that one. Remind me to tell you one day about the time I was in a diner late at night and this guy comes in and puts what looks like a stuffed animal on the diner table next to us. Well, it moved. It was a floppy eared rabbit. I am telling you, I freaked out especially when it started making SOUNDS. It was not my finest hour.

i was never scared of clowns, but i dont really find them entertaining either, i like the circus but the clowns bore me
