my entire collection could be put in a shopping bag and tossed, not that into paraphernalia

I'm not at all ashamed of what I do. A person should only be ashamed when they do something wrong. I do, however, understand why someone would want to hide their kink. We ALL hide our private activities except in the proper forums. Or should. We shut bathroom doors, chew with our mouths closed, clean our noses in private, pass gas in a way that does not offend others and certainly do not leave dildos or, my fav, duct tape on the night stand. Our kids and parents do not need to know the details of our sex life or lifestyle. For whatever reason people are just uncomfortable knowing the details of their parents, kids, aunts, etc, personal activities.

I work at an adult store and we have a lot of female military personnel that come in to buy toys. If they know they are going overseas, they will throw out what they have because they don't want any of it found if (god forbid) something happens to them while they are gone. (I only bring them up because the first time I heard something like that was from them)

I know a few people who worry about things like that. (Not just military personnel) If they suddenly died and family or friends were clearing out their belongings and happened across their toys or bondage gear.

Are we ashamed, deep down about what we do that we worry about how people will react after we're dead and gone? Do you really think their opinion of you would change? Whether it's lifestyle or just a vanilla with toys.

We are all sexual beings, there is nothing wrong with embracing the sexual part of yourself, nor embracing the kinky part.

Sorry if it doesn't make sense, it's early.

Elisabeth'

Tis the same for males........ in combact area's we had burn boxes entrusted to a few so if we went down, the contents were to be burned prior to personals being sent home.

It's sad that the world is not full of accepting people, but I understand people's need for privacy.  I can tell you that I wouldn't want to be posthumously outed.  It's too bad some of the people you mention don't have at least one kink-aware friend that would look after their toys until they return.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Are we ashamed? (1/30/2010 3:14:07 PM)

I don't worry about what they find more where they find it, I always think if there was a fire or something and the firemen came in and found my rabbit under the covers they would think I was a bit messy, to be fair though I tend to be more concerned about cereal bowls or tea cups in that regard

I am completely unashamed -- my daughter works in a small private erotic and costume shop, and I'm completely comfortable going in and discussing the latest items coming in, and finding out what they have to help me be happy with myself and my sexuality.

I think some peoples' opinions of me would probably change if they knew more about my sexual interests and activities, but you know what, most of those people aren't folks that I talk about sexual topics with anyway, and if they did happen to come across me buying a vibe or toy and didn't approve... well, I don't give two hoots about their opinions in that area anyway, so even if their opinions -did- change, why should I care or feel ashamed of being myself, just because someone else doesn't appreciate it.

This question has forced me to think about my fear of being exposed after I die. I've always related to a joke I heard in answer to the question "What would your last words be?" "Clear.... my... browser... history!!!!"

On the other hand, when my mother died, her vibrator was in her night table with the cord hanging out. Clearly it was something she used. I just put it away so other members of the family wouldn't see it. Privately I thought "Good for you, Mom." Believe me, when you are dealing with the death of a loved one, dwelling on their private life not only seems indecent, but the thought is crowded out by all the other things you have to cope with.
