Fitznicely -> Gloves with rigid fingers (1/29/2010 6:32:15 PM)

Wonder if anyone can help me find such an item - I'm UK based, so a supplier in this country would be best, but not essential...

Just to clarify, if needed, these are gloves, ideally opera glove style, velvet or cotton, with an insert which makes the fingers very hard to flex, holding them straight. I don't want them to be obvious, as they'd be worn in public, so it wouldn't work for them to be splayed wide open, but in a more natural aspect.

I've thought of making them myself, but I simply don't have the handicraft to do it.

I'm sure I've seen a pair being worn - poor girl in a nightclub in a very short skirt, definitely couldn't bend her fingers and had the look of a slave about her...

Anyway, any help greatly appreciated [:D]

[:@]How about useing a tight fitting glove underneath,  an outer glove, to make the underglove rigid you could use fiberglas resin, make a mold to fit the glove, on and simply mix the resin and paint the glove depending on how much hardner you use the resin will set up in about 10 to 15 min.

You would need to use wax or wax paper on the mold for the resin to release from the inside of the underglove.

I'd thought about it but hadn't made any progress. Thanks for that :)

I know I can't help... but what an interesting idea!  I love it... I would think though that the "making it yourself... " thing is probably the only way to go.. or contact a small maker of toys in your area and propose it?

Do the gloves have to rigid? Or just the fingers? If its just the fingers i would think perhaps using some tape to lock the knuckles then putting the gloves on..

Fitznicely -> RE: Gloves with rigid fingers (2/5/2010 3:40:28 PM)

Hmm, I like the tape idea...just wondering how rigid a finger could get, that way, and how comfortable it might be for long wear, such as a night at a club...

I see investigation and experimentation in SOMEone's near future...and wearing of very short skirts which may need pulling down...if you had full use of hands...

it would be too hard to sew some small sleeves inside the fingers of the glove, and then insert a thin metal rod down each finger. That way there would be some "splay" movement, but any grasping would be out of the question.

Fiberglass is a good idea too, but because of the nature of the uncured material care would have to be taken so glove could be removable. It tends to "form fit" a bit around things like knuckles, palms, etc...

Maybe you could try finger splints (ike the ones for broken fingers),, i think they would be available off the shelf at a local drug store or what ever.or mail order from a medical supply.
they are just a U shaped piece of metal or plastic. or get some thin strips (3/8 or1/2  inch wide) of aluminum and cut and bend it..

If I recall, we have some cocktail sticks in the kitchen somewhere. Blunting the ends, then splicing a finger with them might be worth a go. Will report my results as and when

"proof of concept" idea using thin strips of bamboo (think rolling/placemat) and band-aid went well.

Concerns raised regarding bathroom breaks when being worn to a pub/club. Answer: *shrug*

A nappy would solve the bathroom issue, and add to the humiliation. Is my skirt too short, is my nappy showing double torment.

I like you [:D]

*grin* sounds like a desired result.. I got similar concerns over a rope harness.. and my reply was.. "the rope gets washed"

You need at Craft stores for liquid or moldable plastic resin. You could dip a glove (spandex?) in a mixture that will harden. So make the glove oversized and you might want to where a rubber glove underneath. Or inflate the rubber glove once in like a spandex glove and then dip it.

You will need to do a little research but you can do what you are looking for. Homemade craft are make from pourable plastics. Ask at your local craft store or search online!

just a thought. for an easier project with similar benefits, just take a glove and sew all the fingers together. and the thumb. the only difference is her hands wouldn't cramp up from being still and she might be able to pick up a glass with one hand but probably not since she wouldn't be able to use her thumb and those gloves are slippery on glass.
