There seems to be alot of misinformation about deafness and the Deaf community. My sister is deaf and have spoken with a lot of deaf people in my lifetime, partly because I know sign language, or at lest a basic version.

deranged maniac: I do have to correct you on one thing, You cannot strip someone of a cochler implant, it is a surgical procedure which places an electronic device quite a ways inside the ear, it cannot be removed, without major surgery.

Most hearing aids simply provide amplifications of noise, and depending on how deaf you are, require a great deal of getting used to. My sister has some but refuses to wear them, She says hearing louder noises which she cannot place or distinguish simply gives her headaches and makes her nervous. Some deaf people can lip read, but they need to be looking directly at you, and if you are drinking, eating or have a mustache, then all bets are off...your best bet is to learn the basics of sign language. Sign language in the Deaf community( many of the deaf see the Deaf community as its own culture) also entails facial expression and body language, which I never acquired. So when a deaf person describes an event where someone was angry, they actually look like they are angry, because they take on the feelings of what they are expressing, It is important to know this because 'society' can miscontrue the interpretation of the language.

I hope this helps a little.

Google is your friend!

Deaf gay

brings up many sites.

If you add bdsm, better yet (more focused.) Or even better, google

deaf gay leather

Gays are marginalized, and even before straights started doing interpertated events, gays were doing it.
"Leather" in the gay community means same as BDSM in the straight community.  Leathermen are marginalized within the gay community.  Guess who has an International organization?  Yep, the deaf leather community.

I'm willing to wager that you're not the first, deaf gay BDSMer/Leatherman with these types of questions (regardless of hearing.) Actually, I KNOW you're not.....LOL! Go and learn from those who have proceeded you.  Just as gays followed black civil rights, BDSMers of all orientations are following the "Gay Struggle."  The parellisms are strong.

As I understand it, there are Leather specific signs in ASL.

No no.. I know this because I have one!! lol. The outer piece CAN be removed. The inner piece cannot. The magnet in the inner piece connects to the outer piece. Without the outer piece you are deaf. If you do not have it on, just like a hearing aid, you are essentially deaf. Sorry for the confusion.

I was going to say that too!  The gay deaf leather scene is pretty strong.  For whatever reason*shrug.

Sensory deprivation - there is more than one sense after all... ahem.  Mummification for a deaf person is pretty much the same for a hearing person.  You might need to blind fold them so they can't "hear".

Talk to the deaf person. I'm sure they appreciate it.  I've worked with a number of deaf people and find they tend to be pretty open about educating the hearing.

Mr. Google.... Use him.  He's a slut that way.

Lily, most people who are born deaf or become deaf or severely hard of hearing early in life do take lipreading classes. As LoveDayStar points out though, it's not like in a spy movie or novel, where you can make out an entire conversation from two blocks away through binoculars. [;)] Many people become deaf or lose much of their hearing as they age, and it can be very difficult for them to learn at that point. I was diagnosed with a hearing loss when I was 12, but didn't have the opportunity to take any formal classes in lipreading until I was in college. It helps a bit, but not reliably.

derangedmaniac, so far, it hasn't really been an issue for my Master and I. Sometimes I'll miss something he says, or misunderstand it, but he's very patient about repeating when needed. I suppose if someone were starting a new relationship with someone who was profoundly deaf, they could communicate in writing, and use signals/codes in play.

I have had the unfortunate situation of being with a Master in training (it didn't last long!) who said that he would punish me for being deaf. I was like... umm? It was very strange!!

I've never heard of these lipreading classes. Interesting!

Deaf play is hot.  It is something that I really get into with my sub when watching sports.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the "general BDSM" topic or not. But I was wondering how you Masters would cope with having a deaf slave- how would you order them around, if you didn't know ASL off the bat? Would their deafness be fair game when it comes to sensory deprivation play? I've heard some Masters say it could be used to their advantage. What do you all think? What would -you- do if you had a deaf slave?

First of all you take the ASL book and toss it out of the window. The slave's cup must be emptied before it can be filled by the master. Sensory deprivation isn't a single highway, it's a cool little two lane full of deprivation and over stimulation ending in the same crappy little town of Confusion Arkansas.

If you want to explore the wonderful world you can create for a deaf slave, live deaf for awhile so you can understand the boundaries of the disability and practice a safe D/s life with him/her.

I'd recommend BSL (British Sign Language) it is much more expressive when it comes to kink.

If you can't communicate with your sub then, well... you're a bit screwed aren't you?

Deaf people are usually pretty good at helping non sign-language users to communicate and As one of the previous posters have said)  many can lipread.

Surely that would depend on the relationship?
