The writers seem to be throwing Bill over a cliff (he's self centered), and as the lynch pin who is supposed to keep everything and everyone together (the glue to a polygamous family with constant issues), this act (running for public office) promises a mighty unraveling.

Do you see the Hendricksons going up in flames or falling apart as the new introduction seems to suggest?

Its a show on HBO.  I don't have HBO so I cannot tell you anything about the storyline.

As you can tell from this thread, the show is widely popular and had a big, devoted following.

I have watched every episode from every season and have always thoroughly enjoyed it until this current season. I just don't like any of them anymore, really. I'm just at a loss for why these women and Bill are even together, let alone willing to risk everything to stay that way. They totally disrepect each other, lie and sneak, and show no deference to Bill as their husband at all. The women have no sexual involvement whatsoever. I'm left wondering why they're so willing to fight to stay together. It's not for each other. It's not out of respect to Bill. What the hell is it?

Then, they go and kill off Roman and turn Alby into a total f'g idiot. The storyline with him and the other guy following each other around like lovesick pups is really pissing me off. Now, Margene has kissed Ben (dredging that potential attraction up yet again). Puhleez.....they're losing my interest totally these days. Oh, and Bill is not cut out to be a politician or a prophet.........luci

I'm going to give it another season, but it better get better as it's not off to a stellar start!

I missed last night, because of that big football game.
I am disappointed in the show this season.  It has gotten away from what makes it great - focusing on the family and its struggles.  There are too many storylines and I do not enjoy it like I have in previous seasons.

LadyAngelika -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/8/2010 7:51:02 PM)

I agree and they are way to sensational, e.g.: with Adelaide's new husband and all... (being vague on purpose as to make this a spoiler)

Nikki's ex?  He is so fun creepy.  Like that character.

Before the season started, the critical refrain was that the story lines emanating out of the compound were believable and engrossing, but that the whole construct of the Hendrickson clan had gone off the reservation.

Bill running for office to help "mainstream" polygamy is ludicrous, and he's become a kind megalomanic requiring everyone around him to sacrifice to his far-fetched vision. Common sense has been replaced by religious destiny, and Bill's leadership promises ruin instead of redemption. He's literally lost sight of everything around him -- his stores, his casino, his daughter, his eldest son, and of course his wives.

In some ways Bill has become a modernized version of Roman with new twists, the most brightline of which was sending his oldest, good-as-gold son away because he's a threat to the polygamous family order.

I had really thought that Bill would see the folly of public office and turn his attention to the compound -- but that does not seem to be the case.

To me, for reasons I don't fully understand, the writers seem to be drop kicking the whole show over a cliff, maybe because they want to show that Bill isn't that much better than the creepier others (Roman, Hollis Grant, his father, et. al.) and they want to drive home the point that the evil in the show is polygamy itself and not the immorality of the "bad polygamists."

KatyLied -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/8/2010 8:31:39 PM)

Yes.  I agree, and I am having an issue with them moving outward too much.  Politics, reservation, it's too disjointed.  Better to keep it close to the family and venture out to the compound from time to time.  There is enough story to develop with just those areas, family, relatives, compound, daily lives.

cloudboy -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/8/2010 9:14:05 PM)

I wonder what happened to Hollis Grant and Selma?

KatyLied -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/9/2010 3:48:03 AM)

That was a dynamic worth exploring.

divi -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/9/2010 4:43:54 AM)

I agree  not too happy with this season. But still a fan of the show.   I do love how they added Sissy Spacek.  And Albert.. god what a mess he is lol

KatyLied -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/9/2010 4:56:10 AM)

Albie is a hoot!  And he cooks.  Gotta love a man who cooks.

LadyAngelika -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/9/2010 5:00:47 AM)

My favorite is Margene. I love how she is just honestly just giving it her best shot without a whole lot of trickery unlinke Nicki who's always scheming. Though I'm not so sure where this whole thing with Ben is going to lead... but it is bound to happen and I think that was a pretty interesting plot line.

I like Margene also it's kinda of cool her selling her branching out with selling jewelry on tv.

KatyLied -> RE: BIG LOVE (2/9/2010 7:02:15 PM)

I like Margene, but Nikki is my fav.  I like her history with the  compound and would like to know more about her ex and daughter.  I like the way she is accepted and everyone tries to understand her and her struggles.  Just something about her, I guess, even through her scheming, I like her.

I wonder that as well. And...if I'm not mistaken....when Bill's mom and dad were buying those black market birds through that fence that night, didn't I hear Bill's mom say "Tell Hollis hello" or something like that? Unless I imagined it, she said something about Hollis. Kind of intrigued me as I thought that might mean a re-emergence of that character on the show........luci
