If it's free, it's often fake. There isn't much you can do about it. If they required credit-card verification, then maybe there'd be fewer fakes, but, face it, the spamscammers would still figure out a way around it just like how they figured their way around captcha and telephone verification. Best way, I've found, is to set your age filter high, say a minimum of 32 (the spamscammers seem to cluster around the twenty-something age category), keep your filters LOCAL (say down to 25 miles or less), which in and of itself will not only drop your number of spamscammers down drastically, but which will net you the same 20 people over and over again, which, after a while, you can see who is a spamscammer and who isn't. Also, you can limit yourself to people who actually post in the forums and journals - but by then you may be limited to about 3 people in toto.
