Captain of 'Deadliest Catch' ship suffers stroke Feb. 1, 2010, 10:31 PM EST SEATTLE (AP) -- The Seattle-based captain of the "Deadliest Catch" fishing vessel Cornelia Marie has been flown to Anchorage after suffering a stroke while the boat was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. According to the vessel's Web site, Capt. Phil Harris was stricken Friday night. Harris was flown to Anchorage and underwent surgery over the weekend. His sons, Josh and Jake, joined him there. The Web site account says it may be some time before "anything substantial" is known about Harris' condition. The Discovery Channel reality show depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska. The Web site reports a family friend, Derek Ray, has flown to St. Paul to take over the role of relief skipper for the rest of the opilio crab season.

Thanks for sharing. As tragic as the news are...on the plus side it happened on land and not whilst on the ship. A friend of mine had a stroke last april whilst she was on holiday in Jamaica...and she had major hassles to find an airplane willing to take her back to the UK due to her condition and to finally get her treatment started...Hope he will recover well [8\|]

I want to apologize to maybemaybenot for double posting this event. I didn't see the post which was earlier than mine and I had NO intention of jumping her thread. I don't post much so please don't flame me like the newbie I'm NOT.

Damn, that's weird. I never heard of THAT Phil Harris, but have heard of the drinking bandleader of the same name on the Jack Benny show - which 99% of modern day Americans probably have never heard of. /Hobbles off/ [sm=injured.gif]

DarkSteve I guess I'll admit it...I too am one of those 1% that still remembers the Phil Harris from the Jack Benny Show, as well as Rochester, the bellboy for Phillip Morris and a few other "characters" from long ago...sighsssssss. Oh my!
