The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism by Max Weber.

You've probably looong left that book store by now, but "Virus of the Mind", by Richard Brodie is a good one, too.  Not political, but a good psychological read.

"How about some philosophy- other than Ayn Rand (yech...)
The reason I bought that first is I've noticed so many really, really don't like her, and I guess the only way to find out is to read it."

I tried reading Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged maybe?) and threw the book.  She's a self centered bitch- I had a friend in college that really liked her stuff and went to one of her lectures- came back bitterly disappointed.

Excellent choice.

I'll try to add few choices you may possibly find helpful;

For general reading - 1984 by George Orwell
read that one

Economics- anything by Ludwig von Mises
Anyone in particular.

Religious classic - Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan (but I only recommend getting the version written in modern language)

Or perhaps even a copy of the "Koran" or "Quotations from Chairman Mao (The Little Red Book)

I think I'll skip the Koran for the time being, pure ancient religious text, bogs me down after awhile, same reason I haven't read the whole bible from end to end.

The Chairman Mao book sounds interesting.

LOL, I just bid on the Little Red Book, and the seller is from CHINA. Maybe it's subsidized by the state.

I personally enjoyed "Human Action" by Mises. It explained how the market can provide for everything a human needs, with no force or fraud involved. Just by you being you. Just by you dealing with the world. All that's required is a brain and a willingness to work.

She can sure be a bit long-winded, but nonetheless, I did enjoy "Atlas Shrugged"

I don't think it was her windiness that got to me (so can Melville or Joyce- except I really can't stand Joyce either)- it was the attempt to justify a very self centered viewpoint that's highly counterproductive to civilization.

A much more readable answer to her viewpoint is Desmond Morris- Bodywatching, which shows how humans have adapted to live in complex societies.

I recently watched the episode of Family Guy where Peter meets Jesus in a record shop. The reason i bring this up is because one of the cutaways in that episode featured Julia Roberts. Who, in that incarnation anyway, reminded me strongly of Ayn Rand.

Me. Me. Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I watched the series or at least I think I did or it had a very similar name. If so the series if I recall was rather long, is there substantially more to the book? As I work on the computer all day, so I've at listend to about every documentary several times over.

No.  The book is a transcript of those interviews, but it is a comfortable introduction to a lot of the ideas.  More complete and detailed books by Campbell for someone who wanted to go further would include The Hero With a Thousand Faces and the 4 volume Masks of God.

Funny Side-Note (to me anyway).

I bid on a copy of "The Little Red Book", from a chineses seller.

And I received the message from ebay, that the auction was cancelled apparently because they were trying to sell it to people off ebay, (to avoid fees). LOL. The Chinese trying to subvert the capitalist system using MAO's book. HEHE.

Funny.
