Level -> Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 3:40:58 AM)

One thing magazines love to do is call dibs on who will be the new "It" celebrities in the year to come. Sometimes they pick stars whose careers are destined to take off, occasionally they make incredible calls with near-nobodies who later become A-listers, and usually the majority of their picks fade into oblivion. While we'd like to think celeb bible Vanity Fair puts a great deal of thought and planning into its annual "New Hollywood" issue, this year the editors really limited their scope when it came to choosing the next big stars. (Or perhaps they overemphasized the "Fair"? ) Every woman on its new cover is extremely thin and very, very white. Unless Vanity Fair considers one redhead to be diversity, we feel the need to cry foul.

Hmm.  I don't think that it's something that we can single out Vanity Fair for necessarily.  Lack of diversity?  Absolutely.  But it's like singling out one looter in a riot.

But seriously, Zoe Saldana? She never occurred to any of them?  Michelle Rodriguez anyone?

DarkSteven -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 4:59:41 AM)

That's like blaming a mirror for reflecting. Vanity Fair shows what the celeb culture is like, and it's overwhelmingly white and skinny.

DesFIP -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 5:02:00 AM)

Hollywood loves blondes and does not cast people of other ethnicities in anything near approaching the proportion of the nation. Can you call them racist for picking among the starlets who have appeared in shows? Or should it not be the studios who are at fault?

Kristen Stewart was catapulted to fame by the mega-successful "Twilight" franchise and will star as Joan Jett in the upcoming film, "The Runaways,"  while Amanda Seyfried's career was put in motion after her role in 2008's "Mamma Mia!" But WAIT: Vanity Fair already had both Stewart and Seyfried on an August 2008 cover touting "Hollywood's New Wave."

I've always been curious how many times on a Vanity Fair "Hollywood's New Wave" cover does it take before anyone is seen as just another actor/actress.

So what!  The fact that I'm wearing black shoes is probably some racial slur about treading on the black race. Or, just maybe, they go with my pants.

That was a bit of an inane analogy, wasn't it [8|] ?

ShoreBound149 -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 5:25:33 AM)

Ya know...I just realized......ya don't see nearly enough Puerto Ricans on the cover of Field & Stream....

Look at two of the other stories to go with the Hollywood bimbette story on the Vanity cover....A profile of a European heiress and The Hamptons.....

I've never opened the mag but I would infer from this cover that their target audience is pasty white rich folks.

ShadowSide -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 5:30:01 AM)

Of course they are, but until those that are doing the complaining obtain the same power, they better do exactly what they are told and like it.

kittinSol -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 5:32:29 AM)

Hey, Level, I read this non-story too, and the photo you published is a VF cover from 2008. Here is the March 2010 cover. As you can see... it's even more glaringly monochromatic. I wouldn't say it was racist, but it's definitely not representative.

EbonyWood -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 5:44:40 AM)

These bitches will never get the gangbangin' they need.

Why pull your dick out of one slut's throat to stick it in the ass of another equally pasty faced bimbette. Boring.

I could try tattooing Slut 1, 2, 3 and 4 on their foreheads but then they start yapping about it 'ruining their careers'. As if.

Damn.. that's ME!! I can't wait for my article in VF.

I will witty and very cosmopolitan!      I am the new "black"

Jeff

DomImus -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 6:31:23 AM)

If Vanity Fair is racist then what exactly is Ebony magazine? The bastion of diversity?

housesub4you -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 7:07:40 AM)

Or BET

I mean if I started a network and called it White Entertainment Television, people would be out in the streets calling me a racist

So at the moment VF has a bunch of skinny white women on the cover, who is their target audience?  So they are appealing to their base, no more no less.  To say this one is racist and say JET is not is BS.  Both are appealing to their few readers and that is all.

Jeezzz, next people will be saying that the Leader of the GOP is sexist for the remarks he made about the women's movement

"LIMBAUGH: Oh, I’m a huge supporter of women. What I’m not a supporter of is liberalism. Feminism is what I oppose, and feminism has led women astray. I love women. I don’t know where all this got started. I love the women’s movement — especially when walking behind it. This idea that I don’t like women is absurd. This is Miss America. And if there’s a Mr. America out there, it’s me."

LaTigresse -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 8:28:15 AM)

I believe Vanity Fair reflects their target audience. I do not include myself in that audience. I don't see any men on there either.........sexist also perhaps?

popeye1250 -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 9:00:33 AM)

Who cares?
Why would any magazine want to be "reflective" or "representative" of society as a whole if that's not the audience they're aiming for?
What the hell does "diversity" mean anyway? And who's "crying foul?" Must be nice if that's all they have to do with their day! Have they ever heard of "Ebony" magazine?
Also, this is "Hollywood" crap, does anyone even give a shit? Besides wanting to see a few of these broads naked in a real magazine I couldn't care less.

juliaoceania -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 9:31:53 AM)

I do not read VF. I prefer Rolling Stone for entertainment news.

As far as "racist". No I do not think it is "racist". I think ethnocentric fits much better, and yes there is a big diff

stella41b -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 9:49:55 AM)

Colin Firth made a similar outburst recently that the British film industry is homophobic.

But you know the media and entertainment industry have been out of touch for years.

But then again we're just talking about the 'elite' here.

I personally believe that the Internet will eventually break that up and the future belongs to the independents, whether that be in music, theatre, the film industry or the media.

There are always alternatives, you just have to look for them.

Musicmystery -> RE: Vanity Fair: Racist? (2/3/2010 10:05:19 AM)

Seems to me the bar for "racist" is pretty low these days.

Anything not entirely inclusive is "racist."

I had white cream cheese on my bagel this morning. But don't worry...I'll have chocolate syrup on my ice cream later.

Ooops. Now I'm racist toward Native Americans and Asians.

Well, I'll eat it with an eagle feather on a yellow plate. While leaning neither left nor right, progressively forward nor reactionarily backward.
