OK, i have always avoided Gefilte Fish because it just looks so ......ew...... but not Jewish here, so never had it served to me! And now i'm dying to know what it tastes like - can you describe it a bit before i go try it for myself? i always thought it would taste like gushy salty tuna fish. Is there a brand on the shelf that's good or is it really something you only eat homemade?

The Gefilte fish I have had is very mild in flavor, doesn't really scream fishy taste.  You gotta eat it with horseradish & the beet horseradish is the best accompaniment as far as I'm concerned.  I don't know what brand is best, maybe Lushy does.
eta:  I'm not Jewish either.  I live with an Orthodox family & care for the elderly Granny.

so 30% fat and 14% sodium, and you only eat the one?

LOL,

I am not even jewish, and I clean out at least half a jar in one sitting everytime I buy one (which I havent done for years)

Its 30 fat, 30 protien and 30 carbs. Isnt that the Zone Diet?[:D]

Well making it from scratch is the BEST. Then its really sweet. But if you cook the jarred or canned over with onions and carrots, it gives it a more homemade taste.

I have Bo to cook for me...He loves to tell the story that went we met up, I was only 95 pounds.

195 before I got pregnant with Lizard.

What can I say.  The man is a chef, specializing in BBQ and smoked meats.  His ribeyes are to die for...

All i can say is that i am not impressed with the cooking skills displayed in here. Ok i did have fillet of pork with soft fried onions, mushroom sauce and aspargues potatoes for dinner. Just another normal evening meal and i never buy precooked meals. Everything done from the bottom and up. Besides i bake most my own bread and cakes. In summer i make my own jams and marmelades. Just taste so much better than the bought stuff.

Oh Rock, I know you didn't read my list then.[;)]. Filet of pork is a great meal, but that is my go to on a night when I am too tired to do Osso Bucco or Duck Confit. Come on now fess up, there are some really good cooks and meals on here. Throwing a steak on the grill and having it come out juicy, medium rare, and perfectly done is a skill, and sadly mangled more often than I care to recount by some dinner parties I have been to. Sometimes making something so simple, like perfectly grilled asparagus rather than boiled to death mushy asparagus takes as much skill as something from The French Laundry cookbook. I give huge props when I get a properly prepared piece of lamb or fish as well. If I see one more piece of overcooked salmon I will cry. I am sure you are a great cook, but I have seen a lot of delicous sounding meals here. The next time I make baked stuffed lobster with crabmeat stuffing and bearnaise sauce I am going to send you a picture. [:D].

Do you seriously think EVERYONE should know how to cook this stuff? I think I'll just come to your house for dinner from now on! I'll bring the wine!

1: P&B sammich (and if you don't know what P&B is, then just stop right there, cause you're going to starve). OK it's not really cooking but preparing...

Ok. What is P&B? I know PB and J...

I like cheap wine, so that's easy [:D]. Bring some Fat bastard chardonnay and it's on! No I don't think everyone should know how to cook this stuff, but growing up on the coast, well...lots and lots of seafood all the time, and the other stuff, that came from my Nana, she was a fantastic cook, thank god, because my Mom? Hmmm. Fishsticks and tater tots with canned peas. lol. My Dad will still call me and beg me to come and make him baked haddock and scalloped potatoes.

Peanut butter and banana is yummy. So is sunshine.[;)].

I can cook, period.  There are some things I can't cook (salmon patties) and Bo teaching me cooking over the years was good.  When I make brownies, I toss in a handful of chocolate chips to add extra gooiness.  I prefer that Bo cook the steaks, though when I am at home, I use the George Foreman grill.  I want a rice cooker so Mom and I can have rice any time we want it (I love sticky rice).

Gawd, I've been thinking about a "Rice Cooker" all night and now just as I'm letting go Shar has to mention it again!!!![>:][>:][>:][>:][>:]

I also took the OP to be asking about basic, easy things that anyone could cook.

Aynne has set my mouth to watering, though. I do love to grill and I love grilled vegetables. Once you have properly grilled asparagus, you won't settle for steamed. I also love Osso Bucco. I rently had raviolis stuffed with left-over Osso Bucco and it was heavenly. To sauce it would have been a sin.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Dishes you really ought to know how to cook. (2/5/2010 12:56:47 PM)

Aunt Fab  says the following are dishes everyone ought to know how to cook:

A good breakfast - good eggs (so many people ruin them - no dry scrambled, no snot in the over eggs), biscuits, bacon, muffins, and a hot breakfast cereal that's not gummy and gluey.
a good roast beef with wonderful root vegetables and gravy
Everyone should know how to fry chicken (she cackled when she said that)
pasta - includes all the pastas with nice sauces - red, creamy white, clam sauce... all kinds of good pastas
good desserts - bake a nice cake (even if it's with a mix)
a nice salad that LOOKS pretty and has the proper proportions of crunch (say that 3 times fast)... I asked her what are the proper proportions of crunch, she said "You  know it when you bite it"
They should also know how to make a good soup.
They should know how to cook vegetables without cooking all the vitamins out of them.
She says they should know how to avoid squash (but I love squash and Aunt Fab doesn't, so don't pay any attention to that one *wink sunshine)
They should know better than to cook cauliflower - it's best raw. (she's opinionated, isn't she?)
