If human rights are possible to overlook and even quash absolutely if someone is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, then they are possible to overlook and quash absolutely on any other grounds one might concoct, and by that mechanism there can be no such thing as human rights at all.

Ugandans are about to pass into law draconian criminal process as it relates to LGBT persons, rendering thereby through the above mechanism the entire population not just readily subject to sub human status based on little more than popular opinion, but actually subject to sub human status immediately it passes, since human rights themselves are extinguished.

So, feel free to do as you please to him (or her) if you should ever meet a Ugandan should this legislation pass - the most you can face is a charge for animal cruelty.

Which reminds me: why does the RSPCA have the same logo as E45 cream?

You don't want to be getting on the wrong side of the RSPCA, they have uniforms and white vans with incorporated cages. The only thing they are lacking is luminous orange and yellow stripes.

The US Evangelists who went there have much to answer for. It seems the Ugandans have taken them at their word, even if they now claim that wasnt what they meant.

The underlying message: 'Don't worry about global politics, Ugandans are still savages, let big brother (or 'big other', for psychology buffs) take care of things, go back to consuming'

I can appreciate the outrage, LadyE, but I really find the "sub human," label offensive.  Might I offer, "scum human," as an alternate?  And maybe without the biggest brush in the box?

But yeah.  I'm with you.  How much aid, I wonder, do our countries throw that way every year?  Maybe my President will decide to throw the pesky human rights activists in his base a bone, and show he can be a tough negotiator with a country like Uganda.  (I don't recall if he has spoken at the U.N. yet...  there have just been so many speeches...)

edit for premature senior moment

Homosexuality exists elsewhere in the animal kingdom. So it's not sub human, it would be more like sub animal then right ?

However I still maintain that we have no right to interfere. Religion is the root problem, and some countries have more of a problem than others. But there is obviously enough public support. That is as democratic as electing anti-Semites in Austria. If that's what the people want, they should have it.

That is the true spirit of democracy, and why this country is (supposed to be) a republic. Every Man would be a dictator if only he could. You get enough people together they could vote that wearing blue socks mandates the death penalty.

There was a mention of parliment or something ? That means it is not a dictatorship. If governments would simply take on their proper roles, the world would be a much different place.

Hasn't the 'States got a long history of pushing over democratically elected governments that they don't like the look of? That Mohammed Mossadeq lad in Iran springs to mind for a start.

I couldn't care less what they do in "Uganda."

Popeye, I am right with ya; except this isn't really about Uganda, now is it?

The Ugandan legislators are being advised and supported by Christian Talibangelicals from Washington, specifically members of the shadowy group caled The Family, made up of elected officials like:
Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Ok.)
Senator John Ensign (R-Nev.)
Senator Tom Coburn (R-Ok.)
Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.)
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)
Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.)
former Senator Dan Coats (R-Mich.)
Representative Joe Pitts (R-Pa.)
Representative Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.)
Representative Frank Wolf (R-Va.)

among others. The fact that our elected representatives approve of and encourage this sort of thinking is what makes some people, shall we say, uneasy.

Not to mention groups like the Family Research Council openly calling for gays to be outlawed.

But off topic, lets all get angry about the influence of Islamic fundamentalists in Europe,, forcing their religious beliefs on a secular society.

Savages, wow, I've never heard that term used to refer to those not recognizing the "western" side of things.

Wait, that's the same name that was used to call Native Americans, but that's it, just those two.

Wait, that's the same term used to describe the Australian indigenous peoples, ok, just those three, I'm sur of it.
