ORIGINAL: Kirata ://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100203161436.htm]Maybe we can save them some time...[/link] Menon and her collaborators found that airborne black carbon aerosols, or soot, from India is a major contributor to the decline in snow and ice cover on the glaciers... "Our simulations showed greenhouse gases alone are not nearly enough to be responsible for the snow melt," says Menon, a physicist and staff scientist in Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division. "Most of the change in snow and ice cover -- about 90 percent -- is from aerosols. Black carbon alone contributes at least 30 percent of this sum." Whew! Good thing, that its only coal soot that is melting the glaciers. For a moment I thought we were altering the ecosystem of the earth through deforestation and polluting the aquifers and overfishing the oceans and wiping out natural habitat. Yeah, I am being snarky; but global warming has become the proxy war over environmentally sustainable practices, a boogyman that is fought by both sides, thinking that this alone willl win the day. Regardless of what someone's opinion of global warming is, the one thing that no one can dispute is that we are trashing the very environment that we depend on to live. And behind all the fuss over global temperature readings in East Anglia, there is an agenda of those who want to ignore or downplay this.
