Termyn8or -> Smokers - FSCs ? (2/5/2010 8:37:59 AM)

Fire Safe Cigarettes. Uhuh. Notice the FSC near the barcode. That means they have a new feature. Ostensibly to curb smoking related fires, I thought maybe this was a good thing, until I noticed the properties of FSCs.

I figured that if a cigarette would go out if not hit for a certain time, great, that means when distracted it would go out and I could relight it later. Yeah right.

As it turns out, they will go out if you hold on to them. However if left unattended in an ashtray they still burn all the way down. I consider that a pretty neat trick and noteworthy. Here you wave the thing around feeding it more oxygen and it goes out, but leave it totally alone it does not. I wonder how much research it took to accomplish this.

I don't know, but here is a little tidbit.

If the cigarette gets soaking wet, such as left in an outside ashtray in the rain, you can see the little rings of chemicals in the paper.  Now, even though I *know* I am putting chemicals into My body by smoking, for some reason, I didn't like it.  I suppose it is a fair trade off, considering the concept.

If I smoked- I would roll my own.

They won't always burn all the way down if you leave them in the ashtray. I know for me, sometimes they will and other times they won't. I can't seem to find a rhyme or reason for it. What I find odd is that for some brands it has really changed the "taste" of the cigarette. I used to smoke Pall Malls (mainly they went on sale more often) and Salem light 100's. Both of them tasted really icky with a horrible aftertaste after adding the FSC stuff. I still pick mostly what is on sale, but never those.

Oh right. I forgot to mention that. They won't just burn ½ way down so you can relight them. They burn down just enough so it isn't worth it. You wind up throwing it out.

I still say it is a pretty damn good trick.

Simple solution...smoke Mohawks

Interesting Termy, because the brand I smoke (DuMaurier, a Canadian brand) will go out if I leave it in the ashtray. They don't continue to burn any longer than if I have it in my hand.

That's what I'm saying about mine too, zeph. Sometimes they go out and sometimes they don't. Doesn't matter if it is in my hand or the ashtray. One thing I have noticed though is that frequently when I need to relight it, it will torch for a few seconds with flames and I might have to blow it out.

Regardless of that, that is how they are sold now, so there ain't much to be done about it other than roll your own.

That's not what happens with me,  they do go out every time regardless of whether or not I'm holding them. They have never torched when relit that's a bit frightening!

I actually don't mind, it's nice to know that it will go out, fewer fires from someone falling asleep with a lit ciggie in hand. [:)]

I don't really mind it either. Once I found the brands that didn't have such a horrible taste because of it.

I agree with you about the 'taste' . Ive smoked the same brand for years, and they definitely taste different now.  I also seem to be coughing after I smoke a cigarette now whereas that wasnt happening before (Ive smoked for over 25 years)

My best friend also said that her throat hurt each time she lit a FSC cigarette (shes been smoking for 20 odd years).

I notice they go out if in an ashtray for about 30-45 seconds (Like just now) LOL

FR - NEW DEVELOPMENT !

I had to go, so I put my FSC out. I tried, it was well over half a cigarette. It relit itself in the ashtray. Fire safe ? My ass.
