I am sitting here at my desk, chuckling at the sound of a car trying to get unstuck next door.

Silly college kids driving their BMW's with their low profile, high performance, tires.

Hitler conducted OPERATION BARBAROSSA without any winter gear to supply his German Army after it attacked Russia. After the first snowfall, Hitler's campaign was doomed. Poor morale in dealing with the cold and snow was later compounded by the first Russian counter attack launched out of Moscow. Russian soldiers, dressed in white and mounted on skis fresh off the train from training in Siberia -- helped push the Germans backwards.

This ill conceived planning was later mirrored by US troops in IRAQ, who sat by idly as the IRAQIs looted the country's government offices of all equipment, supplies and materials -- pretty much negating any possibility of setting up a new provisional authority to govern in the vacuum we created.

Baltimore has banned all civilian vehicles from using the road. I went out walking for 30 minutes. I live right in the Northern Central part of the city, and it was like traversing Antarctica. Luckily the snow is light and fluffy and the accumulation is just around 10-12 inches.

Yes, dear Win, you can always hope for more, but alas, unlike snowfalls which are bound to grow as the winter progresses, other things remain unchanged.

Actually, you know...sometimes things that look small can grow given the right provocation....yeah, that's it.

But, unlike snow which hardens to ice and takes a long while to melt, the other things that get hard turn soft much quicker.

Hence, my analogies between snow and...other things.

Of course. I didn't say that I would ever settle, but wanted to make Win feel better.

Yes, but the theme, too, was poor planning and judgment. During Blizzard #1, I was watching WORLD AT WAR (an old series, one that I think kind of romanticizes war) and the segment was on operation Barbarossa.

Hitler proved about as wise as your college kids in the BMWs. The kids in your area are probably just foolish, but Hitler was a madman. (Scaled up idiocy.)

Here's a recent quote from the NY REVIEW OF BOOKS related to S. Milosovic:

As is often the case with men who bring disaster to their own people, Milosovic was an opportunist and a manipulator without an ounce of common sense.

Regarding the Bush administration on IRAQ, there was this nugget: The systemic failure in IRAQ, Danner makes clear in his book, resulted in large part from an almost willful determination of those who made decisions to cut themselves off from those in government who knew anything. As a historian remarked regarding the extraordinary imprudent Philip II of Spain, "No experience of the failure of his policy could shake his belief in its essential excellence."

Your thoughtful words are a comfort, Sexy.  But 6 inchest of adequate is just fine, so long as you have all of the right "winter" toys to make the best of it.

When you get a lot of inches, you need a good snow blower.
