I am so sorry!! I am a grey mom, and know the bird-human bond. Chances are he did not drown, though, but had a heart attack...

Many condolences!

Lovely plumage, the Norwegian Blue!

Plumage, huh? Too bad you can't say the same for Norwegian men. [:D]

Sorry about jacking your thread, hunkie :)

What kind of bird was he? I just got home from work and am reading your taxidermist idea... I know that I couldn't bear the notion of seeing my bird (or any companion animal) preserved that way, I think it's a good way to honor your bird.

Keep the cage. You never know. I have a grey, and they are large and honestly, not for everyone. Most folks who keep birds shouldn't go bigger than a Pionus or Conure type, IMO. My baby is captive bred, but he is only a few generations away from the wild. Cockatiels, parakeets, budgies, are pretty much domesticated and easier to deal with.

Am I reading this right? You kept a parrot on an unheated porch in Pennsylvania? (Or did you mean kept there after he passed?) And it had been tagged when captured? I didn't know it was still legal to import wild birds. I thought only domestically bred birds were legal for sale.

I am sorry for your loss, but I'm reading many red flags here. Aren't the large parrots supposed to have a lifespan close to that of humans? 7-10 years doesn't sound like a long life to me.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I know there are many folks here who are experienced bird owners.

--  freecycle was where I found the taxidermist.  he was a blue fronted parrot.   As much as I love the larger birds- I doubt I will get one again while at this address.  Once I am able to move- perhaps it will be different.

A smaller bird could happen.  :-)  no hurry- tho.

I had thought of asking for pics of him afterwords... but - it is what it is.

He really was pretty.   I still have a cat - my cat is only 1 year old.    We bonded nicely.  There is alot to know with a large bird.

so- for now it is me and the cat.   :-)

so- I am not too happy.  I found him drowned in his water dish this morning.  :-(

I am not sure what I will do with his cage and stuff.

I'm sorry to hear that. I love my pets and would miss them terribly. I can imagine how you might feel.

Senegal parrots, or any of the Poicephalus species, are a smaller bird with a big personality.  They are great fun.

Sorry for your loss pahunkboy.

Tonight when I stopped in the pet store to get my kitty some food, I totally got cat called by an African Grey. They can totally imitate a whistle, those little flirts ;-)

I'm sure you'll keep your good memories.

..thanks all.

I am going to do some type of makeover to the living room he was in.   That cage is driving me nuts.   The floor plan is a double living room.
