This is probably not the story that health care reformists in the US wanted to see reported on right about this time. Well, the health care bill is basically dead anyway but it has to raise questions when a Canadian premier comes south of the border for surgery. William's US Surgery raises questions OTTAWA — Danny Williams’ decision to seek cardiac care in the United States should jolt Canadian politicians into an overdue debate about the state of public health care here, some experts say. And it would help, they add, if the 60-year-old premier of Newfoundland and Labrador shared more detail about what procedure he’s undergoing and why he can’t get it in Canada. All that was known Wednesday was that Williams was to have heart surgery in the U.S., possibly as early as Thursday. Deputy Premier Kathy Dunderdale said Williams’ doctors never offered the option of treatment in Newfoundland. His decision to go south has led to speculation he is paying privately — an awkward situation for a political leader in a country that proudly trumpets state-funded health care. Many politicians — including those from opposition parties — have shied away from discussing Williams. The silence is problematic, said University of Ottawa health economist Doug Angus. How we fund health care “has not been on the radar. Politicians are deathly afraid of discussing this and it really is something that should be out in the open,” he said.

Earlier this week, Dunderdale said the option of having surgery performed in the United States was chosen after weeks of consultation with Williams' doctors, and because the particular procedure isn't available in the province. "He was able to have his preferred option in terms of the procedure that was used," Dunderdale said Thursday. She would not release any details on the type of procedure that was performed, saying the 60-year-old premier and his family requested their privacy be respected, and that Williams would speak when he feels well enough. http://www.canada.com/Danny+Williams+recovering+from+heart+surgery+Report/2521522/story.html If true, this isnt unusual. Not every country does procedures the same way. Guess we have to wait and see what is said about this later.

I worked in Canada for 5 years and knew many people who went south of the border. The reason usually wasn't unavailbility, it was waiting lists.

Gosh- I posted this a week ago- and it was a conspiracy. heart surgery- the wait would kill him. so- being that heart disease kills alot of people- they had no way of knowing- I suppose.

He was interviewed before he came to the USA and so was his doctor, he is a very wealthy man and he did not feel like waiting, and according to his doctor he could have waited, but when you have money you can get whatever you want whenever you want it.
