(There was, years ago, a horrific scandal involving the Senator and some taped telephone conversations. He was done very wrongly. But it wasn't a factor in the cycle wherein he lost, and as I recall wasn't even Repulican inspired).
The fact is he won in the first place because of his status as a Viet Nam "hero". The truth is that he blew himself up, drunk, playing with a grenade (well, at least, that's the accepted story. Suicide attempt? Who knows?)
I actually met the Senator once or twice, observed him several times, talked to some people who knew him pretty well. I do not know anyone who had a bad personal opinion of him, or had a bad personal experience with him. Certainly including me.
But he was no hero, and he wasn't smeared, to my knowledge.

So yeah, putting images of terrorists juxtaposed with Max Cleland, a man who was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery during the Battle of Khe San is a smear.

Even worse, it was done by Saxby Chambliss, a chickenhawk who dodged the draft during that same war.

See, I don't condescend to people like Dick Cheney or Saxby Chambliss; condescension requires that you feign respect for the subject; I can't feign anything short of contempt for those cowardly weasels.

In that case I tip my hat to you mate - quite clearly you have things sewn up.

I think it's important to have some solid principles you can stand behind. I for one see no basis for a superiority complex in someone who changes his core opinions (and in politics your views are everything) in order to further his career. It seems this doesn't really matter to you - so perhaps in 8 months time you'll be advocating the liberal way.
