Before anybody decides to try for a partisan spin, this law found unanimous approval in the Senate.

Federal law barring lies about medals is tested

DENVER – The federal courts are wrestling with a question of both liberty and patriotism: Does the First Amendment right to free speech protect people who lie about being war heroes?

At issue is a three-year-old federal law called the Stolen Valor Act that makes it a crime punishable by up to a year in jail to falsely claim to have received a medal from the U.S. military. It is a crime even if the liar makes no effort to profit from his stolen glory.

I have to come down on the free speech side of this, distasteful as I might find the practice.  Maybe some enhanced penalties when the line of criminal fraud gets crossed.

Is it not punishable to claim you are a Nurse, Dr, or a police officer? If it is, how is this different to claim you are a war hero?

Real0ne -> RE: At the edge of freedom (2/6/2010 12:01:18 PM)

they already have laws on that for trustees

Jeffff -> RE: At the edge of freedom (2/6/2010 12:06:35 PM)

This is a silly law. This is elected officials giving us what they think we want. This is how they "support" our troops.

This is just like "hate" crimes. More bullshit to pacify folks

Most of the men i know who have been honored to recieve such awards do not brag about them. Makes you wonder about those who do, dont it.

Sometimes it makes you wonder, sometimes it leaves you completely convinced.

A man who feels a need to brag to me about such isnt much of a man. Then again, i grew up around men who earned their honors.

The difference is those impersonations put people at risk.

Now, if you claimed to be a colonel and led troops into battle, then hell yeah.

If we punish everyone who simply misrepresents themselves, our prisons will be even more overcrowded.

Why put em in jail... send em to the frontlines and televise their reactions.... [8D]

DarkSteven -> RE: At the edge of freedom (2/6/2010 12:43:31 PM)

This is not a legal issue.  If someone lies and gets personal gain from it, that's fraud and there is a law for that already.  If he lies and does not gain, then have a cop phone up his friends and family and factually state that he's a liar.  Cheaper and less resource-wasting than trying him on criminal charges.

pahunkboy -> RE: At the edge of freedom (2/6/2010 12:55:35 PM)

well since you ASKED.

oNLY  NWO transnational corporations have free speech.  YOU do not.

DomTeddyBare -> RE: At the edge of freedom (2/6/2010 2:52:32 PM)

So yelling FIRE in a theatre is OK if no one gets hurt? This law goes too far even if it deals with fraud? But the marxists in congress want to put you in jail if you don't use your own money to buy the medical insurance THEY want you to have? THAT is ok? Someone GET THESE A-holes OFF our BACKS!
