Nobody had any ideas that you or the AP wanted to hear.

The ideas are there, and they are very popular ideas.

Well, at least we all agree that no one at the rally had any ideas.

So by your argument, seems nothing happened, and it shouldn't have been covered at all.

And yet still, no one can say what they are.

Others have said it's too soon for ideas.

"Support us--ideas to come" just doesn't sound engaging.

It's a bunch of disaffected Republicans crying for fiscal conservatism and change, via policies that are neither change nor fiscally conservative.

We can get this crap from the current crop of Democrats and Republicans.

The only thing new here is the name.

No, Muse.  You seem to be deliberately restating positions of others to distract from seeing no bias in a news story that happens to fit your template of predjudice, despite it clearly being an editorial lead and the story bearing a heavy stamp of the writer's personal opinion.

That's what bias is, Muse.

Liz Sidoti at the Associated Press didn't try to hide her partisanship either, when she bitterly complained in the opening sentence of her article that "Sarah Palin, in a speech that was short on ideas but big on enthusiasm, took aim at President Barack Obama and the Democrats, telling a gathering of "tea party" activists that America is ripe for another revolution."

I do have to admit to giving Sarah Palin credit.

At least she didn't quit halfway through her speech.

Musicmystery -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:40:04 PM)

The conversation drifted, as it usually does, Rich.

Go back to my comments addressing that issue. Don't just pretend they don't exist.

You're also assuming my position, again.

My take would have been a paragraph at best. Non-story, beyond Palin's name and some Tea Partiers gathering.

Beyond that, as the story says, nothing.

If that's bias, then you're looking through tainted spectacles.

kittinSol -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:41:23 PM)

Why are conservatives so condescending [8D] ? The premise of the OP is that the only available emotions are love and hate, as if more subtle sentiments were beyond us.

To many people, Palin generates neither love nor hate, but rather, mild amusement and exasperation. She still hasn't come up with any original ideas, and her political agenda is completely blurry, yet she is still being touted as the best thing to happen to America since Wal-Mart. PLEASE [&:] ! To her supporters, pointing this out is akin to hating her.

These conservatives are so fucking simplistic. No wonder it's so easy to feel superior to them.

Why

kittinSol -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:43:26 PM)

I think it's in the Bible somewhere, isn't it?

Musicmystery -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:43:29 PM)

For Rich's convenience:

Yeah. I'm sure Muse sees straight reporting, that might pander to the corporate interest a bit. NPR will have the real story, of course.

Have you been a mentalist long?

Do you do shows?

I'm saying Sanity (and you) are predisposed to see bias. I also didn't say it was biased or not.

I asked whether it was true. Consistently, that question is dodged.

So one likely scenario is that it IS true.

An analysis of news reporting, for me, would go far beyond bias. The major problem with many stories, absolutely including AP, sometimes including NPR, is that they are badly written. This, to you, will immediately scream bias.

Look for something consistently and you'll see it there. Ask any conspiracy theorist.

When I gave you a chance to show that bias, you first complained about the "rules," and when I loosened them, complained about "changing the rules." When I showed you the problem with the study you quoted, that issued was dropped.

Is there biased reporting? Of course! Are reporters as unbiased as they think? Of course not. But they generally (at least in actual news organizations, which are in decline) are better trained to avoid bias than the public.

Usually, when someone complains of bias, the real intent is that it's not biased their way.

That seems to be the case here. The lede may be poorly written. It may display the reporter's thinking. But it appears to be true.

Nor do I think it's any particularly damning sentence. Rallies are always big on enthusiasm, short on ideas. It's when people believe it's about ideas, as the tea party does, that it's worth a comment.

And yes, that's my take. But then, I'm an essayist, not a reporter.

Damnation, I missed the party. So... CONceited, CONflicted and simply, CONs. "Con" is a wonderful French insult [8D] .

PS: it means "cunt".

I'm a moderate Independent,

You are not even in the same zip code with a moderate Independent

and I can guarantee you that Palin will cost the republicans the next election if she's nominated. She's another open borders lunatic, and there's no reason for half the republicans to vote for her. Democrats sure won't vote for her, and the only way to win an election is to get the swing voter like myself to support them.

This is one of the reasons McAmnesty lost, since he was another open borders lunatic, and half the republicans saw that and refused to vote for him.

That is not true. "Ace" McCain pulled about 48% of the vote.

It didn't help that the arabs ran up the fuel prices a year or two before the election either to intentionally hurt the economy and get the republicans out office, and out of the middle east. As Chris Matthews said, "history proves that people vote republican during good times, since they see themselves as having the same opportunity to get ahead as everyone else. They vote democratic during bad times, since they empathize with other people and realize they could be next to lose their job. By now, they subconsciously know that democrats will hand out any amount of money to buy their vote, even if it means printing it up.

How much did you get?

the ironic part is that the two major factors destroying our economy are free trade, and Illegal Immigration,

I had heard that there was a small leak in the housing bubble and that a few of the major banking and investment institution needed a few bux from the taxpayers to tide them over the tough times caused by the illegal aliens and your jones for trinkets from China.

and so far the voters have not nominated or elected candidates who are willing to do anything about it. What a bunch of dumbasses.

I was watching the news this morning and someone said she was trashing Obama for using a teleprompter, yet in her interview at the Teathingy she had notes written on her hand.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stefan-sirucek/did-palin-use-crib-notes_b_452458.html

She knew what the questions where and she had to write down her talking points on her hand, LMAO

I'm sure this will be spun, but I do not think O'bama had any notes on his hand when he answered questions from the GOP last week

I haven't seen anything like that since high school.

And people think this whack job is qualified to be President?

I am one that hopes that the lamestreamers keep on underestimating the amount of anger in the electorate out there in 'fly over' land.... the mountain that is about to fall on the Obamaites will be measured for years to come in studying the political collapse of the 'progressive' movement....  a refounding of freedom is about to wash this lamest of all administrations out to sea....hide and watch lefties..... the independants are moving right by the thousands and Obama has a better chance of being historical only in the sense of being the most inept of all modern presidents.... I never thought anyone would surpass the peanut farmer himself as being the lamest dud of all time, but this idiot is coming on fast.....   and once again the looney left implodes....  gotta love it....

It isn't a journalists to judge whether there should be ideas in a given speaker's speech, or not.

Wrong at the most basic of levels.
It is not only proper but necessary for the listener to judge whether there are or are not any "ideas" in that which they hear.
For a journalist the concept is compounded because they are charged professionally to analyze what they hear.

AnimusRex -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 2:01:07 PM)

Why can't reporters just repeat what is said and done, without questioning it?

There was a day, long ago, when reporters earned the title "stenographer" and were respected as the conduits by which information came to us without the "filter" of obejective analysis.
Politicians could speak, and be assured that the people would be given their words without contradiction or comparison to earllier remarks.

Don't look to me to defend Obama.

The original contention was that Palin and the Tea Party rally had a dearth of ideas.

Interesting that everyone readily concedes that point.

Were you there? How the fuck would you know what ideas were there? Silence is not concession, it also can mean no one cares or no one has enough information to comment.
