You could not, at the time, ever have anything in Popular Culture where the Bad Guys are the "Feds" and it's about personal freedom and liberty in a closing, neo-totalitarian society.

Struck way too close to home, and was considered to be too subversive for Popular Consumption.

No one is going to mistake an American Idol contestant singing "Light My Fire", as calling for the disaffected youth to set arson to LA.

Status: offline 		How do I answer this? Being is cool now, hell you can buy "geek" in a Mall now in form of patches and t-shirts.

What defines geek? DND is pretty much mains tream now hell it was New York's best seller for a while.
I think with the advent of electronic games and intenrnet, such activites as playing DND started to be more popular and mainstream.

I'm actually thinking of having a palmtop surgically attached to me, I like sci fi, horror, Goth, vampires, astrology, 1960's music and culture, Bohemian culture, Eastern European culture, I run Windows XP purely for printing, as well as 6 Linux distros - PCLinuxOS, Knoppix, Overclockix, CD Linux PL, Vector Linux, and Xandros..

I still play very old computer games, including Zork - a text based dungeons and dragons game from the early 1980s, I play Frogger, Pacman, and such.. I like the period lifestyle.. I like 19th century Russian art and literature - Pushkin, Chekov, artists such as Ilya Repin, Ivan Kramskoi, and also Communist art Tatyana Yablonskaya, among others, I also like post war Western culture..

I am a minimalist and down-sized.. 'home' for me fits into a medium sized suitcase, all my most essential items, I buy almost everything used and second hand, I never buy anything which isn't truly essential to me, and what I no longer need I give away.. I remember everything what has gone in the past, I know exactly what I am to do today, have a good idea of tomorrow, but next week is a bit vague. This however is all about to change.. but my principles will remain the same..

I had buck teeth up until 3 years ago. 
The moderaters seem to like me 'cos they approve my posts so maybe I am improving.

I'm also quite pleased to see people on the thread making the same geek/nerd distinction that I use ... it's something I always argue for.

Status: offline 		LOL  I will leave the geek title to others, though I did end up taking business computer programming back in my early 20s, not so much out of interest but because I found myself divorced with a toddler to support started out working on contract basis but found myself working 18 hours a day, not good when you are a single mom,  when I tried to get into entry level jobs with companies wages offered were too low to support myself  so changed careers and sold my IBM 64 upgraded to 128 so that it could run COBOL and DBASE and did not get or touch another computer again till 20 years later, I had no interest in sci-fi or star trek or computer games.

Status: offline 		Sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming are all very cool pursuits, but I consider myself a bit too "earthy" to qualify as a twue geek. =) Reading is awesome... but it's sometime I do when I can't be outside.

Status: offline 		There are times when I relate far too closely to "Oliver" on the BBCA series "Coupling." Here's a scene from my private life, which has played out maybe more than a few times...

Imagine a dark apartment.
I fumble with the keys, and lead a young lady (or occasionally a guy) in, for a night of fun after meeting at a local club.
(click) the lights go on.
"Wow, so this is your apartment, eh... pretty cool..." they start saying... "Um.. what is THAT?"
"What is what?
"That thing in the corner. That looks like an iron maiden or something..."
"Oh, that's my Dalek."
"Your Dalek."
"Yes, it's a creature from a british TV show called "Dr.Who."
"So, it's a robot or something."
"Not really, that's a mistake that a lot of people make... actually, Daleks are the creatures inside the robot looking shell, which acts as a sort of space suit/personal tank... see, they were mutated during a nutronic war on the planet Skarro and....

At this point, I notice that they are looking at me, unblinking. Long silence.
"Look, I don't think this is going to work out...."

Of course, at the time, I didn't have the room.

I have to disagree with that. As a very focused interest and strong knowledge in, say...sports, does not qualify you as a geek. I have a very focused interest and strong knowledge of strength training, in Strongman competitions and training, and I don't think that would qualify me as a geek, either.

I AM, however, a Star Trek geek and comic book geek. Hell, two of my four tattoos are comic book characters (Sandman and Punisher).

Although it is interesting how geek is no longer a disparaging term. The evolution of words and their meaning continues...

Status: offline 		Hmm.  I'd say I'm a geek in many respects, and enjoy the label when it pops up.

I was introverted [and to some degree, in some ways, still am...imagine that, those of you who know me!].  I've spent over two decades immersed in science fiction, fantasy, and roleplay,culminating in an unfinished anime-style comic I wrote and sketched; a fantasy world which I have managed to make intricately detailed in these two decades [and more]; dozens of sci-fi and fantasy short stories, novellas, and yes, novels.  I've been tinkering with computers when I was a kid [and shame on me for not keeping up...knowing how to program in KOBOL hardly prepares one for c++...].

So there are some *pushes his glasses up* geeky factors about me.  I'd say they're just who I am, and geek is just another label, one that is comfy to me because it espouses a lot of who and what I am.
