Status: offline 		Being at a fet market yesterday made me think of this topic.
I go on another English website which is similar to here. Just like here, a number of people are regulars on the boards. Just like here one sees various personalities from interesting to over opinionated super heros!
I got chatting to a woman at the market yesterday who was really nice. She was a little shy but very sweet. I asked her what her screen name was on the site and I couldn't believe it was the same person. Online she is an absolute bitch, especially to new members. She is outspoken, obnoxious and in everyone's threads pulling them to pieces. I mentioned her to someone else who knows her well and they said that she's always very shy and very sweet in rl!

How much of the real you do you show on here?
take away the pictures and do you think we would recognize your personality at a small gathering?
Have others on here met keyboard warriors who turn out to be very different in rl ?

While I try to be my authentic self on here, I will have to say that I tend to just answer questions without really engaging in conversation. While in real life, I am typically more conversational. Perhaps it's a combination of the medium of the forum and the fact that most people here are not close personal friends. Not that I don't find most people here friendly, I simply do not know them. Make sense?

Status: offline 		I'd like to say I'm the same person everywhere.  I don't have a closet of masks I put on.  But then, I'm not really an inhibited person, so speaking my mind is just something natural to me.  If I have nothing to say about a topic, or if emotions are running to high in them, I won't venture in.  If people are acting a fool, well, sometimes one just can't help but join in.  I'll tend to veer away from something insulting, unless I feel its warranted.  Now...I can understand how an inhibited person might use this venue as a means to 'get it out' of their system.

For me...its just one more reason to keep this medium in its perspective.  An on-line medium.

If I were to go to a gathering, I would be in the back, watching and listening. I would never speak up. That's how I'm different here. And why I wouldn't go to munches, etc.

The written word is just easier for me.

Status: offline 		I think I'm actually more careful about what I say online that what I would in rl because the written word is so easily misconstrued.
I think that I'm probably more blunt and to the point in rl too but thats because I only tend to converse at a BDSM debating level with people I know fairly well.
I wouldn't for example talk about the deep love of my partner and all that sort of stuff with a bunch of strangers standing round a pub bar and yet I find myself opening up more online to a bunch of strangers.

Years ago, on another site I had a woman be repeatedly sarcastic to me. She told me that if she ever met me she would give me some good lessons in how to be a Domme. Funnily enough I did meet her in a club. Some friends thought it would be funny to point her out to me. I went over, introduced myself with my nick name and said I had been really looking forward to meeting her so she could give me those lessons she had promised. She was very embarrassed, denied it was her and spent the rest of the evening trying to avoid me and I spent the best part of that evening making her feel bloody awkward. I know some people will say that I should of just ignored her but that's where I differ from being online. If someone really pisses me off and I get to meet them then I find it impossible to ignore them but I will have some fun at their expense.

I have met quite a few people from here and I haven't noticed any big differences in personality.

Status: offline 		My nose and tongue are shorter and I talk better than I type but other than that I am pretty much the same guy everywhere I go.

It does have it's draw backs, but sleeping poorly usually isn't one of them...:)

Status: offline 		This being a fetish site I think I get to show a little more of me than I normally do in real life. Most folks who know me from online and then meet me in person seem to see the similarities. I'm probably a little more caustic online than I am in person but interpersonal dynamics and hanging out on a website are two totally different things to me. By the same token real people I have met and know are different to me from the screen names I see here which are just words on a monitor. I know there is a person typing those words but if we have never met they are just a screen name to me.

Status: offline 		I never know how I'm percieved by people online, or in RL, cos I don't tend to ask. Now and again, I'll get a bit of an insight, but mostly...*shrug*

My online personality isn't too different from the real me, though. I'd like to think you could pick me out.

Have to go to some munches and find out

Status: offline 		I am the same me no matter where I am. However, the me I am and the me that people see may be two different things. I appear to be vocal and outspoken when I speak up. I take no prisoners, I don't let people tell me what to think, and if I see something assinine I will speak up. But, I am also reserved, shy, and I tend to stand aside and wait before speaking. In person I am told this looks stand-offish as if I think I am better than others around me. Being shy is difficult when people have a different perception of who you are.

Status: offline 		I'm actually nicer here than i am in real life.  I tend to be smarmy and sarcastic (yes, from MA, go figure) but I do it with a smile, and those who know me know my humor. Basically I'm stuck in elementary school, I only pick on you if I like you. ;)  Here there's no way to couple a smarmy comment with a sweet smile (those those emoticons are cute) so I try to be less derisive.

I truly feel I show the real me here. However, one has to remember that people have different sides to their personality and the different sides come out in different circumstances. It's not unusual, off-line, for people to behave differently at the office than they would at say... a dance club or out with friends. If you only know the person in one enviroment, how they behave in another could very well surprise you.

I have no idea if people would recognize me in a gathering or not based on my behavior in the forums. It would depend on how much they follow my silliness in the random stupidity section probably. Also, I am very aware of the fact that I speak a bit differently on here than I do in person. I have a speech impediment and I have various ways to work around it when I am actually talking.

While in Florida, out of curiousity, I asked Ironitulstahp if I was what she had expected. Her response, with a laugh, was that I was a lot more fun. Phin also commented that I was a lot more silly than he expected so I suppose I have a habit speaking more seriously on the boards than I do in real-life. I suspect it's a combination of being reluctant to physically open my mouth and risk stuttering and hence presenting my point badly and simply that, online, you can't see my giggling and bouncing around my bedroom.
