I was talking to a friend today and he showed me some photos of a cutting done recently. In the shoulder blades there were eagle wings outlined with a scalpel. I was told that the cuts were then hand inked so the design stayed permanent like a tattoo.

My question is, can some one give me information on this please. What inks would have been used? How would they be applied etc?.. I’m fascinated by this form of body art..

I really like the type of body modification/art myself.  I'd really like to try it one day.

This is purely speculation on my part, but having worked for a tattoo artist...Here's my theory.

They probably used the same kind of ink used for tattooing, which can readily be found for sale in the backs of Body Mod/Tattoo magazines.  Or maybe Indian ink.

It could have been poured over/into the wounds, rubbed in by (gloved) hand, or applied with a Q-Tip.

I'm too lazy to actually find any source material myself, admittedly.  Hope this helps, though.  Great topic.

The ones that I've done I usually cleaned the area well with betadine, transferred the design using paper, water based pen (unless I was free handing), did the cutting and then put tattoo ink on the cutting and rubbed it in with gloved hand.  I usually wipe as much of the ink off as possible before covering the clean cutting with tegaderm (clear bandage).  I usually tell them to keep the tegaderm on until it comes off by itself (usually in the shower).

Letting the cutting scab will cause the lines to be white in the center with color around the scab.  For some designs more white in the center might be preferred, in which case you might want to worry the scab and have it form and reform again to make the scar a bit bigger.

Clean with mild, unscented antibacterial soap and water. I just checked my website and the pages of one of the cuttings I did are still up but I think I took the pics out of folder because they are broken links.  If I have time later this evening I'll upload the pics again and share the link with you if you write me on the other side and have any interest in seeing them.  It's three pages of pictures from start to finish of the cutting.  I think it might have been one that I reopened a year after doing it originally.

Master did one on my lower back with a scalpel, its really lovely, you can still see it faintly. He didnt put ink in it. Ive got a picture of it if I can work out a way to show you it, well thats if you would like to see it.
Master has done cuttings with a scalpel and also used a tattoo gun with no ink..He doesnt say much on these forums but maybe if he sees this thread he will....probably not though..He isnt very sociable *grin* (kiss i love you Master)

PS...when he did my cutting..he had the design on paper and then he had this solution and wet the paper and then put it on my back to make the image and then he used a scalpel along the lines.

Im very interested in this form of art myself. I will be getting a tattoo very soon as it is, however, I have seen scarifications that look absolutely fantastic. I just wonder if it is possible to get fairly detailed with them as you can with tatoos. I know you can't draw or create a painting per se using such techniques. Yes, I would be interested in seeing the pics offered.

Hopefully, if I can get around to getting the materials, and practicing, I may also take up tattooing/ scarification/ branding/ piercing, and otherwise transforming the human body into a piece of art.

This is one of our faorite techniques written by a friend on another forum as for the cutting:
quote:

Prep: Approximately two to four hours before the planned scene, give the bottom two Advil. Advil is a blood thinner and will make the process easier. Please note that some people may react adversely to ibuprofen, causing the blood to not clot easily. Ibuprofen is a blood thinner, hence using it. It may also cause gastric distress or allergic reactions. ALWAYS discuss medical problems with a bottom before scening.
Step one: using the favorite impact toy (for this example, I will be referring to flogging), bring the blood to the surface of the chosen area for cutting. You wish to make the skin rosy and warm, but not overtly bruised.
Step two: Clean skin thoroughly. If not fluid-bonded with the bottom, don appropriate gloves.
Step three: Design. It is preferable that the design be simple. I would suggest NOT freehanding the design unless you have a very steady hand. Draw the design on the cleansed skin. There are special marking pens one may obtain from medical supply stores if you have access to them. I just use a felt-tipped pen.
Step four: Assemble tools. I use scalpels, #10s. Have at least two, especially if the design is large, as the scalpel will dull quickly; skin is quite tough.
Step five: Following the design, cut shallowly into the prepared skin. The point is to cut deeply enough to ALMOST cause bloodflow. This will vary according to the thickness of the skin. Follow the design carefully, changing blades if the scalpel becomes too dull.
Step six: The Flowering. After the design is finished, taking one or both hands (depending on the size of the cutting) and slap the design SHARPLY with a very high amount of force. This should bring the blood to the surface, filling the cutmarks nicely. On occasion, more than one strike might be necessary.

Now to add ink, Wolf uses ink we obtain from a tattoist friend of ours, and  outlines with a fine tipped paintbrush, and rubs the ink in with his finger.

Master and i started doing cutting about 4 or 5 months ago. We started with just straight cutting during a scene, but quickly found that wasn't enough. He found a site bmezine.com that has some incredible cuttings and information on supplies. I now have a triskellum on my right shoulder that He has cut several times , but due to my skin type, i do not scar very well, so we are actually looking into skin removal. The tattoo ink sounds interesting as well, and a lot less painful. Hope this helps.

Ever seen the film "Memento"? Basically, you cut the design in, then add simple ballpoint pen ink, and bam, you have a tattoo.

However, I am much more fascinated by the Japanese Tebori style of tattooing, where a long, extremely sharp needle is used to penetrate the body over and over, creating a design, which is then filled with inks. It's elaborate, beautiful, and, most importantly, a masochist's dream.

How long do the scars last - - forever? >>>

It depends on your skin type and your bodies healing process. I had the honor of being "cut" by a very beautiful and talented Lady *Smiles to MizSuz* and the dang thing healed within a 2 week period..there it was gone.

Now Man has done some other cuttings on me and while on my body the "slashes" scars last the intricate designs do not :(, not that I am complaining I love my scars.

Here's to trying until my body finally accepts that the scars need to stay LOL.

Heya Sweets!!! Good to see you.  :)

While I was looking for the pics of the one I did for sherri I ran across all the pics from the night we three did that design on your back.  If you want them let me know and I'll send them to ya's.

We could always go deeper the next time, and if you're so inclined we could rub tat ink into it.  Of course, this might preclude all the 'trying'.  <grin>

I moved to the Albany County area.  I hope if you guys are up this way you'll get in touch and come visit.

Miss yas.

It is really dependent on body type, depth and width of cut.  I had a pair of crossed swords cut into my upper thigh last November using a knife and the scar is very visible; it is a deep brown mark that can very easily be seen from across the room.  One of the swords was cut just a bit deeper than the other so it is a little darker and will fade less.  I also have knife marks on my calves, lower back and butt from last May.  Blood was not drawn with them, so eventually they will fade but it will take many more months; the swords may last the rest of my life.  I have skin that marks very easily and knife and fingernail marks last a long time.
