We’re enjoying quite a treat on Monday nights on UK Channel 4 at the moment; MPs, stripped of the trappings of their elite lifestyles and thrown in at the deep end to live on some of the most deprived housing estates in Britain, where its fair to say the way we peasants live is coming as a bit of a surprise to them.

Obliged to live in cramped, insanitary conditions with rampant damp and mildew on the umpteenth floor of decaying tower blocks where the lift is out of order (again), and to survive on the dole in a world bereft of prospects where the only escape is succumbing to or directing substance abuse, one might hope that our illustrious leaders may get the picture.

Or perhaps it will be the disbelief of the peasants hosting them at their talk of  second homes in the countryside, gardens, holidays abroad and the selection of cars that characterise the elite lifestyles lived by them and their families, that wake our glorious betters to the reality for too many that any one of these things let alone all, would be a dream come true. Indeed, enough bedrooms and a proper bed for the night would be too.

Or maybe despite their apparent horror at what they’ve seen, our MPs will return to their not so ordinary lives and quickly forget all about it as they go back to working for the City rather than the people?

I'm waiting for the sequel: "Prison Block of Commons."

However we’ll have to see how that test case of parliamentary privilege goes.

We had a mayor do it here once, and not for a reality TV show. By all reports nothing substantial changed.

Sadly I dont expect our betters to ever be banged up for as little as a night sharing a cell with the riff raff. I tend to think it will be a few months in an "open prison" at worst.

Meanwhile I wonder how the "laughing policeman" is getting on tonight? 4 years - that must mean Cat A for at least a while - have they put him in general, in with the nonces or on his own I wonder?

Rule 43 I guess. He wont be safe in general so nonces it is. This is rather pleasing as he is the worst kind of bent copper. Whats more annoying is he played the racism card at every turn to further his own nest. This is partly due to the Mets rush to embrace anyone wishing to join, so that the equality figures look good.

I think four years isn't enough for such a crime, I shudder to think of the consequences for the man if the IPCC didn't step in.

I say ten years at least for the ultimate abuse of power.

Indeed Sl4v - four years for abuse of power, well "misconduct in public office" wasnt it?

Now how does theft by false accounting stack up against misconduct in public office I wonder? One must surely infer the other, and if so then our MPs (on conviction of course) should get something comparable by way of sentence? (Especially that POS Elliott Morley)

Big difference between theft and trying to frame someone though. Even if you are right about Morley and co.

What annoys me the most is the bare faced cheek of them to even think of using this line of defence, if they had used another defence I wouldn't be so angry. The use of this defence proves two things to me:

1) They've been considering their prospects for quite some time, to invoke such an old law.
2) They are admitting they have no moral line of defence for what they’ve done and are guilty but all they care about is getting off of the hook rather than clearing their name legitimately.

I also think those charged were scapegoats. Several bigger fish got off the hook for similar claims.

I think the difference is that there is some evidence apparently that these people faked documentation such as invoices and receipts whilst another supposedly asked for rent on a property he was the owner of.

The other cases were immoral but not against the rules or any laws of the land and one other case had no sufficient evidence.

It's disappointing so few have been charged with wrongdoing but our whole political system is hanging in the balance and if more were charged it would have been disastrous. It was scary there for a time.

Agreed PS (apart from Morley). Jim Devine for instance - he just seems to have been hung out to dry? I'd like to see the tax evading home flippers face the sort of come-uppance I should had I done similar. "I've paid it now" dont f'in wash with HMRC for the likes of us.

It's a bit of a stretch anyway. As I heard it reported the law was written to enable debate to be carried out without restriction and not to allow MP's to commit crimes.

Thats about all I can see in it SL4V - "Parliamentary privilege" as it relates to debate, not as it relates to immunity from the law.
