Settle this arguement please :)

They have these things called Venn diagrams nowadays...

It's crazy what those academics come up with, I know.

Neither one is a subset of the other IMO-that's overly simplistic. There are overlaps.

I can't reply to that as I don't want to give which side of this poll I'm on :)

At least not before some level of results.

LadyPact -> RE: BDSM a subset of D/s or vice versa? (2/9/2010 2:57:35 PM)

Neither.

Wolf2Bear -> RE: BDSM a subset of D/s or vice versa? (2/9/2010 2:59:46 PM)

Does it really matter?

Domin8tingUrDrmz -> RE: BDSM a subset of D/s or vice versa? (2/9/2010 3:03:52 PM)

BDSM = Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism - essentially play
D/s = Dominance/submission - essentially dynamics

Some use the DS part of BDSM to include Dominance/submission.

BDSM may have some D/s undertones involved, it may not. D/s may have some BDSM elements involved, it may not. For me, they are related, but not subsets of one another.

This, innit.

Depends, different people see it differently I am not going to answer the poll because its so contended

TopChuck -> RE: BDSM a subset of D/s or vice versa? (2/9/2010 3:58:51 PM)

There are no activities in BDSM that don't involve someone in a position of dominance and/or someone in a position of submission.

There are many people in D/s relationships that aren't involved in BDSM, at all.

All BDSM involves D/s.  Not all D/s involves BDSM.

The Venn Diagram is inaccurate.

There aren't enough responses to the poll yet, to determine the opinion of those in Collarme.

The results of a poll will not change the facts, but they may reveal the ignorance of the people taking the poll.

I have to disagree with this. I have a masochistic side, and sometimes I let people I trust hurt me. That belongs in the 'S' category of BDSM.

I don't, however, submit to them. It's a mutual thing-we discuss and negotiate what is going to happen both before and during play. I don't ever cede control. So there you have S but no D/s.

And I resent the implication that disagreeing with you makes me ignorant.

Since I did not take part in the poll as I do see this in my own way, thus I fail to see, how you so quaintly put it, reveal my ignorance.

If you had said "There are no activities in BDSM that don't involve someone in a position of a Top and/or someone in a position of a bottom" I would be more inclined to agree.

You didn't. You MUST realize that some people go to events and play with people who they neither submit to nor dominate. If you are incapable of realizing these facts, you reveal your own ignorance.

Fitznicely -> RE: BDSM a subset of D/s or vice versa? (2/9/2010 4:20:13 PM)

Re-do the poll with a "Who cares, I just get on with life/my relationship" and you'll get more answers, guaranteed.

A "Top" is in a position of dominance.  A "bottom" is in a position of submission.

A Top provides a sensation, a bottom receives a sensation. Sensation is just sensation. A submissive is capable of being a Top. A dominant is capable of being a bottom. The two, dominance/top or submissive/bottom, are not one in the same.

That right there is the problem: we are talking two different languages. Doesn't seem worth continuing, so I'm out of this discussion.

Nope, as i understand it, a Top acts as dom for a scene directed by the Bottom. My understanding is that the Bottom is in ultimate control of the scene and therfore very much NOT in a position of submission.

Never topped, to be honest, and don't have any desire to. If I've got some part of the definition wrong, apologies.

Then how does that apply when a person who identifies as a Top yet bottoms to may activities? There is always some form of power being exchanged between the persons and that power fluctuates back and forth even though the dominant primarily dictates how that power or control is used. As a sub and even though I voluntary handed that authority to another, I still retain a measure of authority or control when I express a need and when I express a limit the which is not to be violated.
