Status: offline 		Law makers were supposed to sit down today a talk about an extension of unemployment benefits past the current deadline of Feb 27th, 2010. Democratic law makers claim that the latest extension to the end of this month was a compromise because republican law makers would not sign for a further extension prior to the vacation these employed individuals got starting in the middle of December.

Many states representatives and other experts have claimed that if an extension is made into law that MILLIONS of unemployed workers will fall off the unemployment rosters and lose their benefits between March and June. The current unemployment rate in the US is still in the 10% range. This does not include those who have already exhausted all of their unemployment benefits and are no longer reporting.

Is this the future of the US?

Status: offline 		I heard one of the talking heads yesterday mention that part of the new stimulus bill they are going to extend benefits out to 99 weeks. Not sure how true that is, but it is a hell of an extension. I would also guess that if such an extension was put into law, that those that slipped through would be covered.

Status: offline 		I have to say that beginning March, the job outlook improves. Warmer weather, gearing up for construction, hiring for resorts... all these help in the hiring market.

There are no easy answers.

Status: offline 		To add to this issue, experts are saying that the extension would need to be passed by this Friday to limit the severe chance of disruption on the state level. Currently, Both houses are going into recess for all of next week and because of the weather, may not likely meet at all for the rest of this week. What this means is that millions of unemployed workers will be sent letters informing them that their benefits have or will expire and, even if there is an extension at the last minute, state systems may have difficulty not letting a large percentage of those individuals slip through the cracks of an adjusting system.

I wonder, which of these lawmakers who are dragging their asses will have jobs after the mid term elections solely because of this lack of initiative? 10% of a voting population is enough to change the whole game.

Status: offline 		Tazzy, I hope you are right about a turn around, but both FOX business and CNBC do not see it happening that way. Most of the business people interviewed on both of these shows are talking more like the 2nd quarter of 2011.

Certainly, this is the future. At least it is for short term (a few years). There is no driver for the economic growth that can be identified. The "recovery" that politicians are boasting about has been limited to some big businesses, especially Wall Street. Joblessness is projected to increase even more. The government is unfit to reform the system, there is not enough tax revenue to support poor people. We will face public unrest very soon.

Status: offline 		No offence, boijen, but i dont trust these economists. I do trust my experience with the job market. Many industries, especially construction and service, can be trended out. Many of these are either part time, or under the table jobs. But the hiring will start. Just no way to know for sure how many. Thats the difficult part. I dont see an end within the next year. But i do anticipate an easing by summer.

Status: offline 		A good indicator for when companes will start hiring again is retail and wholesale inventory levels and purchasing. Those numbers have been essentially flat for the last 6 months or so which indicates a lack of demand at the retail level and a lack of confidence that that demand will rise soon at the wholesale level.

The question of how to get an economy running smoothly again after a serious ecoomic disruption is really not clearly known. We know that after 1929 things got a little better after 1933 into 1937 but that when federal spending decreased the economy turned downward again which suggests quite strongly that there was still something fundamentally wrong with the economy. Realistically it took to about 1948, with all the federal spending both for the New Deal and WW2 and almost 20 years of pent up consumer demand, for the economy to right itself. Hopefully we saved ourselves some of that by not waiting 3 1/2 years to take any substantive action this time. However with significantly more than 10% of the adult population unemployed and trillions in equity wiped away money is not flowing in the economy in the usual way and we may need to take some action to put money back in the hands of the average consumers before things will improve this time.

Status: offline 		Well perhaps the Stimulus would have helped if like every other country in the world who has one made it so money spent had to go to that countries business's first, China, Japan, France all had stimulus deals but they had language that the money stayed in country.

Unlike this country which a certain party cried protectionism and that it was not free market. 

A Chinese company called A-power is helping to build a massive $1.5 billion wind farm in West Texas. The consortium behind the project expects to get $450 million in stimulus money.  Walt Hornaday, an American partner on the project, said it would create some American jobs. "Our estimation," he said, "is that we are going to have on the order of 300 construction jobs just within the fence of the project."  But that's in addition to 2,000 manufacturing jobs -- many of them in China.  Lauren Reynolds, a reporter at ABC's San Diego affiliate 10 News, paid a visit to the vacant office of A-power.

This company did receive  60% of all stimulus money for wind power, they have a vacant office in SF and over $450 million went to China.  If you want to know where the jobs went start calling your elected officials

resort work is seasonal... not exactly a recovery plan... although it does certainly help college and high school workers

Status: offline 		Many places hire college students because thats all they can get. That trend may continue, it may not. But, even college students getting paid helps the tax base. Something needs to start it all up.

I have to agree with jen on this one tazzy.
Almost everyone agrees that unemployment will remain high for at least a year or two.
Many believe unemployment will remain high for many years to come. 
The real question for ME, is how much higher will it go?
I don't think we have seen the bottom yet, at all.

If they don't extend and keep extending unemployment benefits, welcome to full on Depression.
Extending unemployment benefits for years, is one of the big reason's we are not in full Depression mode.

Housing demand is down, commercial demand is down...we are hoping for public spending to trigger infrastructure work.

I don't see john q. public doing much spending at all Rex.
I thought I heard that foreclosures will continue to rise.
We certainly have not even hit bottom yet.
I just wonder what will happen, if/when we ever stop spreading "stimulus" money.
