Ive been in debates about this for ages. Is Figure Skating and especially Ice Dancing a sport. I'm not denying that the participants are gifted athletes but c'mon. A significant part of your score is "costuming'. that would be like if you ran the 100 M Dash and the guy who was wearing a designer singlet got 0.2 seconds subrtacted from his time over the guy who was wearing a pair of grey sweat pants. also in ice dancing, there are things you are NOT allowed to do because they are "too athletic".
Finally. It is NOT possible for a woman to win a figure skating medal unless she is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.
Once again, these are amazing athetes but so are pro wrestlers.

Is it a sport? I dont think so

Let the flaming begin LOL

Vitally healthy, beautiful young women prance and twirl around in skimpy, tight fitting outfits… and you’re bitching?

That aside, I’ve always loved watching the Olympics – the pomp, the athleticism, and yes… the stories. What I will be most interested to see in this Olympics is whether or not Lindsey Jacobellis will get that monkey off her back.

In my opinion, yes.  It takes muscle, coordination, and being in shape.  I'd be huffing and puffing just trying to make it around the rink!

I suppose it's a fair question though.  Is shot-putting a sport?  That's always been a curiosity.

Being i cannot put skates on and go around a rink even 1'' worth. i think the athletes are amazing. I think that in any sport where you use your mind and body and compete against yourself to become better and better.

My hats off to them.

Let the games begin!

I would think figure skating is more of a sport than curling.

By my own rules, yes, most certainly a sport.

For me, for something to be considered a sport, and not just a game, the participants must,
A:  Get off their butts
AND
B:  At the same time, be forced to put down their drinks.
*B-1:  Those beer hats do not count as putting the drink down.  If you can wear one of those and properly utilize it while participating, it's not a sport.

My daughter shows horses. In halter classes, the horses wear minimal outfits but only the prettier ones win. And I have seen some ugly horses that have great conformation.

The riders in western wear amazing outfits as well and the common saying is "ten pounds is the difference between championships and reserve".

People like pretty. Thin and pretty beats fat and ugly. It's a fact of life.

yes, if people honestly think car racing and cards are sports, then certainly figure skating or curling are sports.

I like car racing ok but how is it a sport? What defines a sport?

There is more to me with ice skating than sitting in a car and driving with two hands and one foot on a gas pedal and brake.

Yes, both require skill but there is more to ice skating than curling and car racing.

Just my opinion...More is involved...

lol well i'm not saying curling is the most intense sport, but it does require actual physical exertion, unlike car racing

Here a link to the scoring system for figure skating used in the Olympics and other international contests.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISU_Judging_System As you can easily see, there are NO POINTS awarded or deducted for costuming.  Each element of the performance is given a certain degree of difficulty.  As it is performed each judge then gives an additional -3 to +3 score depending on how well each element was done.

I haven't yet checked into ice dancing, however, your first statement is false as you included figure skating.

peppermint, if no points are awarded for costuming, why dont they all perform in warmups? the points are for "presentation" that includes costuming. I dont deny that these are awesome athletes but so are "pro wrestlers". Hell, ballerinas are awesome athletes but ballet isnt a sport.

The OLD system included 2 scores, one for technical difficulty and one for artistic impression which "could" have included choice of clothing.  After the big scandal several years ago the scoring was changed.  Please check with my link to see how the NEW scoring works rather than make broad accusations about something you have not researched.

The reason they do not wear warm ups is the same as the reason brides don't walk down the aisle in cut offs and t shirts.  For this, one of the most important days in their lives, they want do look nice.  Everyone who participates in the Olympics wears clothing that is appropriate for their sport rather than sweats.  They all look nice and clothing can make you faster while running an event such as Super G.
