I am a fan of pain play, particularly flogging of any form. However, I am planning on getting my first tattoo within the next couple of weeks, located between my shoulder blades. Quite a bit of the tat will probably extend out into strike range. So, I was wondering, for those who scene with tattoos, how do you go about protecting the design? Is it possible to destroy the design, etc? How long should you wait after you get a tattoo, and, I am also wondering, should I make sure I come in to get the tattoo with an unmarked back? I don't know if welts, bruises or other marks would interfere with the inking or not. Yes the artist I was talking to does know I am into the lifestyle, considering her comments on the design I chose, so scareing a vanilla is not a concern.

Hi Slipstreme,

I've flogged people with tats. What it usually does is irritate the area and raise the ink. It's actually pretty cool to feel it. The danger you face working with tats is damaging them in some way. If you happen to cut it, it could heal so that the image is not match (like poorly matched wallpaper) or it could scar. If it scars, some effort can be made to reink the scar tissue, but I imagine no one would want to HAVE to. Or, if it scabs and gets picked at, some of the ink could be picked out.

I'd wait until the area has not only "peeled out" but isn't tender to fingernails being scratched against it. Of course, this isn't a foolproof method, but it's a start. I'm by no means an expert.

I have a tattoo in the same spot on my back. I also get hit there with some regularity. Like FireMaam said, mostly it just causes my tattoo to raise and be a bit itchy. Don't use anything that could cut on the tattoo, because that can cause ink to fall out. According to my artist it isn't a problem to tattoo over scars, but getting touch ups is a hassle. My artist doesn't do the BDSM thing either, but I asked about the possible risks of trauma to a tattoo, just to be sure.

The nice thing about the upper back is that it's pretty darn hard to bruise, and the area between the shoulder blades is set down, if that makes sense.

Also, wait till it's FULLY healed to get hit on it. I think we waited in excess of three months.

(My tattoo is my avatar. I've had it for a year and a half and it's still in as good shape as it is in that picture)

Yeah I'm going to see about getting it relatively small so that it isn't in the way, because I do have a thing for weapons I know can, with use of force, cut skin. At least I am usually not hit in that area with much force. I will bring it up the next time I go to the parlor to see what they have for me. I may raise the design up to where my neck meets my back, but I know that it would then be pretty darnned hard to hide if need be.

Thank you. Irritating the ink after it heals sounds pretty cool though.

Old scars can be tattooed over, and will even lose some of the original thickness, in some cases... like having them exfoliated. Open wounds & freshly marred tissue shouldn't be tattooed, per my own artist. The ink will not hold up. I always refrain from extensive play, for a few days before my appointments. As someone else mentioned here, damaging the tissue (post tattoo) will cause loss of ink and will require re-work. Definately let it completely heal...I consider mine healed when the tissue no longer has a shiney glaze over it, and all of the shedding is complete. I can then handle cuffs/whippings, etc. I do not allow any type of activities that will break the skin, on my inked areas. Currently I am about 28-30 hours in on my tattooes.. with much much more to go!!

As a tattoo artist and a collector, why would ANYONE pay for a tattoo then go about destroying it? Even when someone has a cover up done (and I have quite a few of those) its more painful and it doesn't always look well because the skin can only absorb so much ink, not to mention scarring from the previous tattoo doesn't take ink well (as you have read from other posts). The feeling of getting tattoed is cool (and it is; I am a Dominant but I love the feel of tattoos!) but it certainly isn't financially a good idea to keep destroying them only to get them repaired.

Now, about placement: I have always advised My slaves NOT to get tattooed where they will be hit hard (flogged, spanked, etc) because of the possible destruction of the tattoo. However: if you enjoy being flogged and want a back tattoo, you can either cover it to protect it by using gauze and skin tape, or even wear a t shirt. Kinda defeats the purpose of the flogging sensation, but it will help. A single tail, on the other hand-WILL and DOES rip flesh, so no matter what you do to cover the artwork, it will be destroyed.

With low back tattoos, you can use a weight belt and besides, anyone who flogs in that general area should NOT be weilding a whip. But accidents have been known to happen.

BTW-if you love the feel of tattooing but don't want the ink or can't have the ink or just want the "scar", you can always be tattooed without the ink. Its the same method only-well duh-there isn't ink in the tube. Takes a few days to heal and depending on your skin type, can leave a small scar or brand. Many times though, it has to be done more than once (like cuttings) to get a deep effect.

And you can always get a branding, too....if you like the raised effect (brand around the tattoo also, but not at the same time). Those stand up to play a lot better. And what could be better than getting a brand DURING play????

I suppose that from a masochist who loves body art point of view its hard at best to find a place where things won't get ruined, especially if you like heavy flogging. If protection is used over the art it will be fine but then again, if you plan on having your entire back covered with ink-you might have some interesting decisions to make. Tattoos are difficult to heal sometimes just as a matter of course-adding BDSM to the mix makes it trickier.

Is getting flogged so dam important you cannot wait a couple weeks for it to heal. A tat is going to be on you forever why even take a chance ( even a slight one) that it may get damaged in some way.

Slipstreme, i'm going to tell you the same thing I use to tell my customers when i did tats.... leave it alone. No flogging, no nothing around the tat area till completely healed. If a scab is knocked off, it will ruin the look. If the tat is cut, ink can run and ruin the design. As far as getting the tat while already welted or marked, is not good either. It can cause the design to heal in a different form than what you wanted.

Please leave that area alone until it heals. There are plenty of other parts to torture in the mean time.

I have several tatoos one on each shoulder and one over my genitals and both areas get flogged on a normal basis. Now, while the tats where healing there was no way I would allow anyone to flog them for several reasons.

1. If the scab comes off it can / will change how your tattoo ultimately turns out.

2. It hurts! Not a good hurt either. My exhusband slapped my shoulder the night I had one of my tats done and sent me to my knees and had me in tears for almost an hour because it hurt so bad and I enjoy pain typically.

IF you want to be flogged before it heals I would suggest find another part of your body to have flogged. It is truly not worth the risk.

Once the scab heals enjoy. I have not personally had an issue with it damaging the ink work after that point and as I said the areas I have inked are typically the floggers targets. The sun does more damage to my tats than any flogger has.

I did not say that, and I dont like that tone of response. I never mentioned anything about not being able to wait. No I am not seeking a gigantic tattoo either, I'm thinking about 3in diameter max, and tried to pick a place on my back I know is rarely played with. I will probably wait the extra time to make sure it healed. I was just asking for some help in knowing how long to wait, etc, because I have never been inked before. Yes I do have an obsession with flogging, but I am not stupid.
A simple polite response would have been better appreciated.

For those who were concerned I am going to go willy nilly and let the tat get destroyed. I won't and appreciate your concern and kind advice. And thank you truesub for letting me know about scening before the tat. I'll be sure not to do anything for at least a week or greater prior as I was a bit worried about how the process would go if done over marks.

I have been thinking about the scarification process, as I do like the end results of those, however, I don't know if it would be possible to do the design I want with that process, as it seems to warrent simpler designs.

I'm hoping this goes well, being my first, especially considering that I don't fancy needles much.

Awww Slipstreme...Now you've gone and made me want to have another tat!!!

I think, since you enjoy pain play you will find the process of getting your tat guite enjoyable...I sure did, and I'm no pain monkey! It was an endorphin rush, and a spiritual experience.

Slipstream: I HATE IVs and I HATE having My blood drawn but I can sit for 4 hours and be tattooed so go figure. It isn't a "sticking" sensation like that of a piercing (I HATE being pierced but I have several, all facial) but again, I can sit through a tattoo which is more of a "scraping" situation (even that isn't the correct word for it-you just have experience it). Its like really intense sensation play with a vampire glove or abrasion play, only its repetitive and depending on the size of the tattoo and skin thickness, can get really irritated quickly. The outline is the most intense part I think, but that's just Me.

Don't worry about it so much and enjoy it. They ARE addictive, especially to masochists <G>.

First, going into the tattoo with unmarked skin is important, I think. I would think that bruises and other marks could interfere with the tattooist being able to place the design properly. Definitely ask him/her before you go in, though, to see if they have a preference.

As for playing with a tattoo, I have on that gets whacked and welted pretty regularly and it doesn't seem to suffer any for it. However, I do think you need to protect it until it fully heals. After that point you can have at it without any problems.

While some people can play after having a tattoo and have it "hit" without damage, there are some people who have skin that keloids. This goes for any scar they have whether it be on purpose or accident (yes, some people DO scar by accident <G>), a raised patch of skin will develop in response to trauma. As a piercer I have seen it thousands of times, and I have seen it on tattoos as well. Usually, this scar does NOT go away, and has to be either surgically or laser removed. Dark olive and black skin are the most prone.

This can give you something to think about when getting any kind of body marking; the ability to keloid is hereditary as well). If your family has it, then its possible for you too as well. (people into cuttings and brandings COUNT on being able to keloid!) The reason I mention this is because many people here have said they have no problems playing after tattooing and that's fantastic, but for a small percentage of people, that could really do more harm than good.

I think your wise to be enquiring here. Gaining the experience of others, is a wonderful resource that ive benefitted from on Collarme.
Please let us know how your tat went. And also, how you found sceneing affects your tat, or visa versa. Im due for some permanent marking this year, but we have yet to decide where and how. And the questions you raise, and responses given have offered me insight i did not have.

Obviously, I don't have a tendency towards keloid scars. I tend to heal very quickly and very cleanly...which is unfortunate because I'd love to have some scarification done and I think it looks amazing when the design heals with a keloid scar. Oh well, we all have our crosses to bear

you can "fake" keloiding by constantly irrititaing your scarification. More can be read about this on the BME site I posted above. I had a friend who had flesh removal and one of the things the artist told her to do was to irritate it as much as possible, preventing the healing and encouraging the over growth of scar tissue. It was a very painful and dangerous operation (there is ALWAYS the chance of infection and then you really have trouble!) but eventually, she got the raised scarring she desired. Her pix are on BME under "Vega".

Another way is to constantly cut over the same spot over and over again, waiting between healings. Very few cuttings scar the first time and need to be done over and over. I caution you however, to please seek someone experienced in cuttings or you cut too deeply and again, create new problems (blood poisining, impetigo, etc). Not cool. Make sure things are always sterile (do I really have to tell you guys that? Nah!)

So don't give up on scarification practices, they can be erotic and a wonderful sign of ownership and devotion. My own slave, I have branded, pierced and tattooed personally. It was a great bonding experience and I feel very close to him and he feels completely owned. I also share a tattoo with him-a nautical star-I did on both of us (yes, I tattoo on Myself!).
