I've heard DragonCon in Atlanta is a comic book/sci-fi convention mixed with a BDSM convention. True? A good place to meet like minded people?

That's an interesting question.  I have friends that are pretty regular attendees, so I'll ask them for you and see what they say.

If there were an event where sci-fi/re-enactment was paired up with open BDSM, I'd like to hear about it.....

In my limited Con experience, the sci-fi and SCA types at events like Mid-South Con, ShadowCon, Gulf Wars, etc. do walk around twirling floggers, dress in fetish wear  and such, but I've seen precious little in the way of lifestyle...no educational seminars, or discussion of BDSM realities...so I suspect for many it is just another fantasy

And yes, I am aware that there are plenty of people in those groups who practice BDSM, but the ones I know tend to keep the two separate

You may be thinking of Frolic Con, at http://www.frolicon.org/

I've never been, but it looks enticing!

I've heard and seen a video on DragonCon where it seemed to be rather wild. Yes there are people who practice BDSM there, but according to my friend who has been there, it does not focus on the lifestyle, but many people who do go feel they can show themselves for what they are.

I can speak with some authority about Dragon*Con http://www.dragoncon.org

I was Director of the autographs department for the 2001-2005 shows, a volunteer staffer for the 1994 - 2000 shows, and I attend my first D*C in 1990 (when Tom Clancy was the Guest of Honor).

Dragon*Con is one of the biggest, most heavily attended SF/Gaming/Media conventions in the US, if not the world.  It is certainly the biggest annual SF convention not located on the West Coast.   Think of it as a 4 day non-stop party with 20,000+ of your favorite SF/gaming geek/fanboy (or fangirl) friends.

Dragon*Con's attendees are.... diverse is a good word.  Multi-racial, multi gendered, multi-oriented.  You will also find a VERY large Goth/Fetish/Leather contingent.  Dragon*Con is a safe environment to wear your street legal fetish wear.  Yes, you could walk around dressed as The Gimp from Pulp Fiction and not only would no one scream in horror, most people would recognize who you were dressed up like and you might even get asked to enter the Costume Contest.

However, Dragon*Con is most emphatically NOT a BDSM convention.  While the fetishwear is acceptible, and even some slap and tickle play might go on, D*C is not about the Lifestyle.  It is intended to be safe for everyone, from small children to aged grandparents, to gather together and have fun.  Some people push the boundaries, some cross it.  It you cross the line you may find yourself politely escorted from the convention and have your con badge taken away.

The closest thing to "lifestyle" topics are panels about sexuality in SF, and they did bring in John Norman (original author of the Gor series) as a guest a few years back.  Don't expect flogging demos.  Though you might have fun attending the "stage combat" classes.... *grin*  And during the wee hours of the morning you might find some hentai slipping it's way into the mix in the Anime room...  And lets not forget that KAG (the Klingon Assault Group) throws one hella party and the Klingons ARE the SM crowd of SF.... *LOL*

Frolicon, and it's predecessor, Fantasm, are the "Adult Oriented" SF conventions that I am aware of.  Dragon*Con is a BLAST!  I've had a helluva ride the last few years.

YIK,
- Geoff

The above poster summed it up well. DragonCon isn't about BDSM but there is such heavy BDSM/Geek crossover, of course there are kinky people there. There are kinky room parties, and the local BDSM TNG group (Whippersnappers) even hosts a few things during that weekend. But no, it's not the place to find antything official, and it is a family event.

Oh, and Frolicon. Yeah, Frolicon should be a kinky con. There will be gaming and lots of open kinkiness/playing. I'm trying to go but my ride decided to bail out on me.

Inconjunction in Indianapolis has had panels on BDSM topics and even furry topics in the past. Last year I was on a panel about sex in science fiction and fantasy that turned into an impromptu reading afterwards. I know at least one person on the board of the group that runs the event is also very widely known in the BDSM community in Indiana too that probably influences their choices of panels and topics.

This year's theme is Harry Potter stuff though so I'm expecting it will be toned down a lot fo the kiddies around. I'm still hoping to get to run my "Ghoul: Fatal Addiction" rpg though in the evening -- that is really Ds themed to a good degree.

Thanks, Geoff.  Yes....close to how my friend also described the Con.  She attends a lot of afterparties that are frequented by those interested in "slash" fanfiction , but said even that's not very "out" during the day.

Hmm. I've never heard of Dragon Con or any other "Con" being a joint BDSM production. I'd say more goth than BDSM. Meaning people show up in Goth wear.

Comic-Con does have the X-Sanguin ball every year. It's not a BDSM party, but it's heavy vampire/goth. They occasionaly have a Shibari demonstration.

this will be my first year at dragoncon, but i was also struck by the impression that while everyone's free to express themselves (within family-friendly and legal limits), it's not a bdsm-oriented event so much as it is a...not-so-mainstream oriented event.
