Anyone else going to give up date night to stay in and watch the Live comedy premiere of Bill Maher...But I'm Not Wrong?
Among the topics Maher is expected to discuss in his ninth HBO solo special are:
  • whether the “Great Recession” is really over
  • the fake patriotism of the right wing
  • what goes on in the mind of a terrorist
  • why Obama needs a posse instead of the secret service
  • the drug war
  • Michael Jackson
  • getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan
  • racism
  • the Teabagger movement
  • religion
  • the healthcare fight
  • why Gov. Mark Sanford will come out looking good and how silly it is to ask “Why do men cheat?”
  • and why comedy most definitely didn’t die when George Bush left office
Fun times!

I might stay home but not to watch Maher. His political insights are about as spot on as his comedy was funny.

He's brilliant, isn't he? What I like is that even though he is all about left politics, he doesn't shy away from calling the current administration out when he thinks they are off track.I love when he reminded Obama lovers that "He's your president, not your boyfriend".

He doesn't hide his political agenda, but I think he's relatively fair in that he will hear the other point of view and doesn't see the world in black or white. We need more role models like him on this planet.

I'm not staying home just to watch it but, since we'll be here, we'll probably watch. We both find him very smart, funny and spot-on most of the time but, even to two flaming liberals like us, he can be an arrogant prick sometimes. Oh well, it's not so bad if you agree with him, I suppose, but conservatives must see him like I see Glenn Beck, Rush and their ilk. Can't wait to see his latest observations........luci

Agreed. But I love it when he is because he's smart enough to pull it off ;-) And there are times when he is so absolutely vulnerable and human too...

Not this conservative.  I've never thought Bill (the bigot) Maher was as smart as he seems to think he is, but he is insightful and funny.  I liked Politically Incorrect until he stuck his foot into his mouth and out his ass, and when we got HBO, Real Time was programmed into the DVR.  The problem I have with him is his contempt for religion and people of faith, and how he chooses to express that contempt.  After a while, I turned off his program.  I see a bigot, and I won't condone his views by adding to his ratings.

I think he is a lot more open minded towards religion than you think. What he doesn't approve of is what people do in the name of religion. He also has issues with how people take some of the parables and bible stories verbatim (talking snakes, etc). So do most religious scholars I've met.

Ok, so no, you won't be watching it.

Can you then explain why you added "TV is not the answer" afterwards then? That is the part I didn't get.

How do you be a conservative and find programming that does not hold contempt towards your beliefs?

Dennis Miller is a bit too wordy and ain't all that funny anymore.

Much of what is created for the "arts(?)" ( a stretch to include tv) Is mostly created by folks with a "liberal" slant in their ideaology.

I occasionally still catch a few episodes of "Boston Legal." Not a great show but a tolerable time killer, I guess. I was always amazed at how many of their cases would fly right in the face of conservative beliefs. Over time, it became a bit worn and tiresome. I did enjoy the banter between the liberal, Spader, and the conservative, played by Shatner.

Rich, what I have always enjoyed about you is that you have a great sense of humor.

Jeffff and I went out for a beer and we were both laughing fairly hard over your "nature abhors a vacuum" post. Classic!!!

I wish you came over to this side of CM more often. There is to be accomplished over on the political side of CM. Your input is always fantastic when you spread your talents over here

Domi, but the conservatives have the Stephen Colbert ;-) He's hilarious. But it's true, hard to find a good Republican comedian. Same in Canada, not many Conservative comedians...

Agreed, Rich. That's when I think that "arrogant prick" part comes in. He's entitled to his beliefs as we all are but he can be quite contemptuous of those with whom he disagrees. The reason I compared him to Beck, Limbaugh, et al is that I think they often do the same. I can't relate to their viewpoints and when Maher spouts, if I were conservative, I'd probably feel about him like I now do about those guys.

As domiguy said, you do have quite the sense of humor. I remember back when I first starting posting, I was ranting about Ann Coulter. You engaged me in a conversation that stood your ground but wasn't an attack, even though you disagreed. Others should take a cue. Thanks...............luci

I disagree that your country is no longer governable. Someone just has to put his big boy pants on.

Funny thing, DG.  I'm not a Christian, so they really aren't my beliefs, and I'm fine with points of view other than my own.  I just  find Bill (the bigot) Maher to be over the line.

And South Park slants my way often enough
