thishereboi -> NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 8:59:51 AM)

There is another thread on boycotting FOX and while I have never thought it did much good, maybe Brain is right and this is the way to get their attention. Not sure how anyone could think it would be appropriate to air this, but they did.

I don't think they should have shown it.

But NBC showing the video has what to do with FOX News?

I was relating it to the boycotting part of the other thread. So sorry you missed that. Next time I will try to be clearer.

You're going to boycott Olympic coverage because they reported a news story? Good luck with that.

I wouldn't have run the video either. But people will want to see it, and it will be all over the Internet anyway.

flcouple2009 -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:23:30 AM)

Sorry I didn't connect the dots.

I've never been much on watching the Winter Olympics, I barely watch any of the Summer ones anymore.  So I guess I've actually been boycotting for awhile.

TheHeretic -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:23:46 AM)

Interesting bit of video.  Usually, angels don't get their wings until after the bell rings.

The story became major news.  They had footage.  Of course they ran it.

LaTigresse -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:28:04 AM)

Agreed.

I wouldn't have shown it but I so see a certain hypocrisy in people's outrage.

Most people find movies and video games depicting far worse, completely acceptable entertainment. But let a news programme show an actual, accidental death, and everyone gets their undies in a bunch.

Pretend blood, gore and dying is okay. The real messiness of life, unacceptable.

It makes no sense to me.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:29:10 AM)

Why shouldnt they have shown it? Its news, people are interested in it. Hell, it was probably a conspiracy to kill a suspected Georgian spy. Didnt anyone see the ruts that directed his runners off the track?

domiguy -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:36:56 AM)

I saw the the accident. It was from a distance and the guy hit a pole and died. It wasn't like he exploded, he hit a pole and simply ceased to exist.

I have seen far worse. I didn't even get that feeling in my "gut" when I view something that I wish I would have avoided.

You should start a website....thishereboi boycotts NBC's sponsors because a guy died.com

I know that the executives at NBC are terrified on the impact on their sponsors if "thishereboi" refuses to spend his money on their sponsors products.

I'm not outraged, but I think it was was unnecessary. I also see a big difference between showing someone dying on tv, where there is a chance that someone who knew him, might see it and video games with cartoon characters.

on the hypocrisy bit - Is it the inconsistency you see in people's anger against certain news stations? Do you think if FOX had aired this, people's reactions would be different?

Music - no I am not going to boycott the coverage. Like I said in the OP, I really don't think it does that much good.

Heard the pulled that bit of video... even from youtube.

Meliai -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:54:58 AM)

I didn't see the video, but apparently my children did on Friday. (ages 10 and 12) While they can handle movie blood & gore, seeing a video of a real person's death is just different....disturbing.

No outrage here, but I'm glad NBC decided to stop showing it.

Pop some pills and don't worry about it.

sexyred1 -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 9:58:35 AM)

I don't find it necessary to show the video. The kid's Dad said he did not want to see it and that is HIS SON.

So, it was bad enough that it happened, but to debate it is silly.

Oh, and there is a complete difference in movie/TV violence and death and focusing on a real time situation that cast a pall on one of the nicest events, the Olympics.

Far be it for anyone to actually be able to take time away from how horrible it all is out there and just be happy to watch different countries compete for medals, rather than fight.

Lucylastic -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 10:03:26 AM)

Just as an aside, CTV here in canada showed the crash too. They have the Canadian broadcasting rigthts, BBC also showed it.
Right or wrong, it was news.big news considering its THE games.I hope its the last death in the olympics
That luge run seems dangerous from the various sources I have read

igor2003 -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 10:30:20 AM)

I don't really think there was anything wrong with showing it. We have evolved into a society that over-sanitizes everything. Executions used to be public so that people could actually see the consequences of wrongful actions. Now they take place behind closed doors with a few chosen legal witnesses and the rest of us can pretend it doesn't happen. TV programs like The A-Team come on with guns blazing, cars crashing, and things blowing up left and right, and everybody gets up and walks away, so young kids play with guns and go joyriding in cars because they think even if something happens nobody will get hurt.

Every once in a while we need a good dose of reality to remind us that we are mortal and vulnerable. If seeing the actual consequences of what can happen when things don't go as expected will cause even a few people to think twice about something they are getting ready to do, then I really can't find fault with it.

thornhappy -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 10:34:50 AM)

It's been done for years, on those cop reality shows that show footage of policemen being shot by criminals.

I don't watch TV news - I only saw stills on a Yahoo news page.

domiguy -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 10:37:22 AM)

There is a reality to the video. It is not overly gross or disturbing on a "visual" level and it does depict the end of someone's life.

Kids watch violent video games and movies where death is endlessly portrayed in a surrealistic or cartoonish and far too often in a extremely graphic manner. We discount the impact of this type of violence but show mock outrage at the real McCoy.

So we hide our dead when they are killed in war and we try to ignore the realities of our own mortality but seem to have no problem when death when it is fictionalized.

I would think that this video is the perfect time to explain to children that there is often a price to pay for the actions we choose to partake in.

You sit them down and explain, "People do die and if you little fuckers don't shape up soon this will be your fate."

LaTigresse -> RE: NBC airs video of accident - Maybe boycotting is the answer (2/14/2010 10:52:35 AM)

Agreed.

As for whether or not it would matter what channel showed it, I have no awareness as to who has or has not shown it. I cannot watch the games because of my Dish Network package. It doesn't matter to me either way who has.

To me, it is hypocritical to be outraged over a 'real' death and yet find fictitious death, acceptable viewing.
