A new poll shows that by a 50-44 majority, most American would support ending the filibuster that Republicans are using to obstruct progress. The filibuster used to be a rare occurance, but is now used on every single bill and appointment in Congress. The filibuster does not occur in the Constitution, and is a simple Senate rule. Removing it would allow Congress to pass health care reform, immigration reform, banking reform, among other things. However, it could also be a double edged sowrd next time the Democrats are in the minority.

I don't support ending the filibuster. However what is going on in the Senate isn't filibuster but simply teh threat of such. What's going on is debate on a bill doesn't start until they have enough votes on cloture to limit debate. Otherwise each senator is allowed to speak as long as they can hold the floor which is what a filibuster really is. If Reid had a spine he'd simply schedule the debates and let the GOP try to filibuster. IIRC Thurmond managed just over 1 day.

This isn't a new critter. Republicans talked about eliminating it under Bush. I didn't support it then. I don't now. Only an idiot would. It may serve the purpose now, but try, do try to look to the future when the "other" side just might be in power.

I don't support ending filibuster but I do support going back to way the way it was originally done. Reading the phone book or whatever. None of this "I filibuster" and that's that. Make them work for it if they want to filibuster. As you so deftly noted in your last sentence people better be very careful what they wish for.

Sounds like a prime example of Dem/Lib short sighted stupidity to me. Go for it, and your tears will be so sweet when the Repubs get any sort of majority back. It seems like they were pretty big fans of the filibuster when it was their only tool against Bush II before the '06 election... Another example of this short-sighted stupidity is directly responsible for the Dems losing the 60 seat majority they had not so long ago. If the Mass. Dems hadn't decided to change the rules for replacing a Senator back in '04, for the sake of their own petty partisanship, Kennedy's successor would have been appointed, instead of there even being an election for Brown to win.

If the Democrats end the filibuster and pass all those reforms Democrats won’t be in the minority for 25 years.
