Stephanie Coontz wrote a book about the 50's titled "The Way We Never Were." She pulled back the curtain to reveal that in many ways the 40's and 50's were riddled with denial and illusion. Cognizant dissonance is the term I frequently associate with this period. Maher is funny, and makes plenty of good commentary, but he also has plenty of his own bias, and such is reflected in his monologues and performances. Uncle Nasty
