Indiana's Evan Bayh to retire

quote:

WASHINGTON — Sen. Evan Bayh, an Indiana Democrat who was on Barack Obama's list of vice presidential prospects in 2008, is ready to announce he won't seek another term, saying he's fed up with Congress.
"To put it in the words most Hoosiers can understand: I love working for the people of Indiana, I love helping our citizens make the most of their lives, but I do not love Congress," Bayh said in comments prepared for an announcement later Monday in Indianapolis.

His statement was obtained by The Associated Press from a Democratic official who declined to be named publicly.Bayh's departure continues a recent exodus from Congress among both Democrats and Republicans, including veteran Democrats Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and Patrick Kennedy of Mass.

The announcements have sprung up in rapid-fire fashion amid polls showing a rising anti-incumbent fervor and voter anger over Washington partisanship, high unemployment, federal deficits and lucrative banking industry bonuses.

Another Dem washing his hands and walking away from the mess he helped create...Good riddance.
p.s. he's walking away with $16 Million in his "war chest"

Bayh is the fifth Democratic Senator not seeking re-election. He joins Sens. Chris Dodd (Conn.), Byron Dorgan (N.D.), Ted Kaufman (Del.) and Roland Burris (Ill.)

Please explain how exactly these are "Obama's chickens".Seeing as he is our President any roosting taking place will affect us all.....Democrat,Republican,Independent and the indifferent.
Hell I'm not even sure how you are connecting a decision not to seek re-election to the President's doorstep......seems that according to Bayh's own statement it is working in Congress that rankles him....not the occupant of the Oval Office.....you guys really need to do some connect the dot exercises before you start these threads !

Well, he said he's fed up with Congress.  So it's possible it has nothing to do with Obama.

When Congress had a Dem supermajority, they couldn't pass legislation.  Now they'll never do anything except blame the other party.  Maybe he didn't want to be a party to that.

Thadius -> RE: Obama's chickens have come home to roost! (2/15/2010 10:04:10 AM)

I think it is more of a political move, to position himself for the 2012 presidential run. I personally like Bayh, he is in general a straight shooter. By retiring at the end of this term, it frees him up from any connection to pending legislation, and gives him plenty of free time to parlay the anger at the incumbents.

Pretty smart move.

Connect the dots? Are you serious?
Funny how you on the left try to disassociate what's happening in congress to the current administration. You can't even see that this administration is so polarizing that senator's, who have compromised, and worked together for years, some of them for decades, no longer feel like they can accomplish a damn thing, and feel the need to retire.

It's you Obama supporters who need to start connecting the dots, and realize how bad Obama is mucking up the country, and spending us into oblivion.

I guess the GOP might not be dead after all. Things are shaping up nicely for November 2010.

They shouldn't get cocky either. The people are upset at all of the usual suspects, which includes the Repubs. I would venture a guess and say that it will depend on who fields the better candidates this fall, and not so much on the party they belong to.

servantforuse -> RE: Obama's chickens have come home to roost! (2/15/2010 10:36:39 AM)

I agree. His chickens have come home to roost, but the repubs better not start counting theirs just yet...

The only prediction I feel safe making is that third party candidates will do better than expected.  My hope is that disgust with both major parties will make third (and maybe fourth) party candidates viable.

THEN you'll see some change.

Thadius -> RE: Obama's chickens have come home to roost! (2/15/2010 10:43:21 AM)

Well the first Tea Paty candidate was just elected to the New York legislature. He is expected to be certified sometime this week.

Who knows?

I would love to see the national offices be opened up to everyday folks by third and fourth parties. Unfortunately, I don't believe enough folks think they can fight against the big 2, or that they can make much of a difference fighting against the big 2, YET.

Not the sort of third party I had in mind.  The tea partiers as far as I can tell are one note Johnnies.  But at least they seem to understand fiscal restraint.  We may be heading for a variant of the European system under which there are so many parties that they all cut deals after the elections, hopefully only for legislative issues and not for pork distribution.

monte carlo gaming.........thats the best way to do this.

Thadius -> RE: Obama's chickens have come home to roost! (2/15/2010 11:01:32 AM)

MMMMmmm bacon. Oh and a few sides of ribs for me.

Oh wait, you were talking about spending.

For some the unknown is far scarier than the known, so they will just throw their hands up and say "What can I do?".

Something is in the wind, I just hope we are still standing afterwards.

servantforuse -> RE: Obama's chickens have come home to roost! (2/15/2010 11:07:52 AM)

Policies like this might save money short term, but will cost more down the road. If even a 3rd of those released are arrested and prosecuted the cost will be huge.

Sorry, wrong thread..grand daughter on my lap...(2 yrs)

SFU, please identify which policies you're referring to.  Or are you intending to post in the thread about early release?

I agree, the time of the incumbent career politician is at an end, lets hope the two party stranglehold comes to one as well.

Too much turmoil for people to trust third parties right now. They may pick up a few votes, but unless someone runs a DINO in a blue state/disctrict or a RINO in a red, they arent going to win.
