pyroaquatic -> Does a Pyroaquatic Make Any Sense? (2/15/2010 10:29:02 PM)

Okay time for me to make a tired fool out of myself.

Since most of the time it feels like I am having an out of body experience I would like for everyone to take this silly little survey. I find that individuals have a difficult time digesting me.

I am not too sure here (which is why I am doing this poll) but in the land of Physical Interaction I get many odd stares.

I do not mean to be enigmatic. I just want to know if I am understood.

Also, some suggestions would be helpful. Constructive critique.

You say 'a' pyroaquatic implying there are more in the colony.

I need to hear from these before I can make an informed decision.

I'm leaning sfg890xs09asdfnewt! for now.

Makes perfect sense. Just pour some gasoline on water and light it. You've got fire and water - pyroaquatics!

My life is full of those who don't make sense to anyone but me.

I find that the people who don't make sense seem to make sense to everyone else in the world. How boring.

Hope your ducks get in order btw.......

It's hard to make sense of your writing.

Constructive criticism:

First, a very minor one, easily addressed: Your punctuation sucks, making it simply hard-to-read.  Punctuation is there to aid the reader.  There are many errors of omission in your posts..... Slowly read out-loud what you have written, and you'll see what I mean (I hope.)

When I typed that last sentence, I realized you are writing in a stream of consciousness manner...... That's okay  to get the thoughts written, but then you need to edit, edit, edit.  I pass through ALL posts at least twice before hitting the send button.  <I have years of editing under my belt.... I was editor for a gay porno magazine.>

THE major difficulty you are causing the reader is: You often use phrases or words that seem to have a meaning (to you) that is not shared by the rest of us.  One of the definitions of mental illness is that the patient has a different reality than that of the vast majority of people.  So that's were you get the rep as a wack-o.

Some examples from your OP (Original Post) which is quoted above for reference:

"I find that individuals have a difficult time digesting me."  Yep.  I do have a difficult time digesting you.... as would anyone trying to digest any other person.  One can digest thoughts, not individuals.  To get your point across, use the word "understanding."  OR write "I find that individuals have a difficult time digesting the meaning of what I'm trying to say."  OR "I find that individuals have a difficult time digesting my point."  And so on.  I was reading along and the phrase "digest me" stopped me dead in my tracks..... That phrase means to eat, swallow and then digest your physical being.....

Next we have "I am not too sure here (which is why I am doing this poll) but in the land of Physical Interaction I get many odd stares."  First, we take out the parenthetical phrase to get: "I am not too sure here, but in the land of Physical Interaction I get many odd stares."  <I'll add the comma for you.>

Maybe you meant: "I am not too sure about here, but in the land of Physical Interaction I get many odd stares."  That long-ish phrase "in the land of Physical Interaction," is weighing down the sentence with some hidden meaning to you.  I haven't a clue as to where you're going with that idea.  If you meant "real life," there's even an abbreviation for that!

That gives us, "I am not too sure about here, but in RL, I get many odd stares."

Well, guess what?  One can NOT get "odd stares" here.  Thinking "Whatever does he mean by 'odd stares here'?" de-railed me from following your train of thought.  <Get it? .... de-railed.... train>  And that problem is endemic in your posts..... you seem to have an odd manner of speech.... I like to say (after editing hundreds and hundreds of pages of stories submitted that never got published), "We write as we speak; we speak as we think."  No wonder you're having trouble in RL.

I could go on, but one last one for now. "Pyroaquatic from Pyroaquatica," implies to me a sense of isolation.  And not just from the rest of us, but (as above) there is no tribe.  You're on the desert island, alone and have decided to make the best of it by naming your realm after yourself.  Yes, yes.  I know you're having fun, but the sense of despair of having been abandoned outweighs any implied playfulness.  You have been serious throughout.  Changing tone at the last minute rarely works.

I hope these few suggestions help.  Punctuate correctly; watch for odd phrases; maintain your tone throughout.  Humor is difficult to inject.... Especially in e-mails and posts.  (That's why God gave us LOL.)  Sarcasm is simply impossible to convey. Don't even try without clearly demarking it and so stating. <That's the voice of experience speaking, my friend.>

I think the easiest thing for you is to write in Word or Wordpad or some such.  Read outloud. And then cut-n-paste.

Good Luck on your journey to find an appropriate voice for expressing your interesting and creative ideas.

LanceHughes -> RE: Does a Pyroaquatic Make Any Sense? (2/16/2010 2:24:20 AM)

Short, short version:  You must write for the reader.  This is especially true for electronic media.  You are writing as if in a journal where words mean what you want them to and punctuation is optional.

Good Luck on your journey.

Level -> RE: Does a Pyroaquatic Make Any Sense? (2/16/2010 2:51:48 AM)

Pyro, what Lance said makes a lot of sense, but I'd add this: if you feel that changing your writing style would remove your "essence" from your posts, and if that means more than being clearer than you normally are, then don't.

I picked "maybe" on the poll, as it's a sometimes you're clear, sometimes you're not kinda thing.

Pyro,

You already know my thoughts about your posts, but just to reiterate....you make me think.  You may not mean it but you are enigmatic...is that a problem?  For me, no.  I understand, and what I don't understand I take the time to try.

If it bothers you what others think, you can take the advice offered as it's good.  If you want to mantain your uniqueness....accept and revel in it.

Editing and all that is nice but not necessary for me.

pyroaquatic -> RE: Does a Pyroaquatic Make Any Sense? (2/16/2010 5:52:12 AM)

Okies. [:)]

Thank You Lance Hughes.

1.) More Editing.
2.) Accurate Punctuation.

I will add this however:

The style of my writing is not created to confuse readers. It is as CarrieO said, I write to make people think. If they would like to be lazy enough to say I do not make any sense and not bother to 'figure it out' (it's not that difficult) then so be it.

I've tried to be non-unique my entire life and I have failed wonderfully at it. I began to accept it two years ago. Ah.

If folks perceived what I perceive it would make an immense amount of sense.

So. To all of those that responded...

Much Thanks.

Exactly! Thank you Fluffypet and CarrieO.

CarrieO, what a GREAT Gilda Radner quote!

Pyro, I'm a great fan of yours. The things you say, and the way you say them, are precious. YOU are precious. Change what you want to, but don't lose yourself.

As long as you are becoming more and more yourself with each passing day, you are living the life you are born for.

Lance is right, editing will presumably make your posts clearer for the masses. But I like them the way they are, because I get the flavor of you, in them. Stream of consciousness writing serves you well, in this respect.

If people don't seem to really get where your coming from in real life, just find the ones who do, and hang out with them. Have FUN and play around, with your unique point of view! Ditch the straight laced, boring people. We all have to be around them for a certain amount of time, in our lives. So we learn how to put up with them, and communicate in a way that they'll understand, when they're around. But we don't have to be like them. Don't become a flat, boring version of yourself to cater to them! Because maybe a lot of them are really like you and I, but they're afraid to show it. Maybe they've dumbed themselves down, for the masses. So when you communicate with them, do try to draw them out a little, but don't get frustrated if it doesn't work. Just keep a positive attitude, and be gentle. Some people are trapped inside themselves, and some people really do have brains as vapid as cardboard.

YOU make the world a beautiful place. I don't want to live in world of boring automatons. I'm glad there are plenty of colorful people like you and I around, to liven up the place.

Pyro, I do enjoy your posts, although many times I am not sure just what the point is.  It is as if you are sitting in the Land of Pyroaquatica have a conversation at a dinner table, and then you post ONE portion of it.

In other words, I do not always get a sense of your begining, middle, and end of your thought.

I do not think that this makes you crazy, brilliant, or chicken loving.  Overall, from what I have seen, you seem to be a kind and decent person.  You are working on self-discovery and self-knowledge.  You are taking ownership of your words and actions.  I find all of this commendable.

I have also noticed that it seems, to me, that you are in a bit of a funk.  The things that I mentioned above are HARD.  Most of the changes and betterments are going to be invisable for a time, and then they will pop out.  I promise you.  [:)]

If you were to write a response to ME that I did not understand, I would just shoot you an email about it.  When it is the start of a thread, well, I give so few thought-out, serious answers on the boards, it just does not bother me, and I move on.  (Besides, we have all seen how my serious answers can hit a nerve.)

To sum up, if you are happy with the types of replies that you get to your posts and threads, just keep doing what you are doing.  If you want a different type of reply, you need to take an action that will have that consequence.  [:)]

This!

I adore your posts and, if I do not at first understand, I find that a quick second read through gives me the 'ah ha' moment.

I have to do the double-read-through thing as well, but I love the way you put things, Pyro.

Normally I am smiling by the end of the second read-through.

You may well be the only person on the entire planet who uses...ellipses...more....than  I do...though...

lizi -> RE: Does a Pyroaquatic Make Any Sense? (2/16/2010 8:53:12 AM)

Lance had a lot of good things to say and so did everyone else. Personally I find you interesting but I give up at times on 'getting' your posts. At times I'm lazy and dont' want to put in the work, other times I do and will pour over what you wrote a bit more in order to understand it. If you're ok with a hit or miss audience then keep on with your bad self. If you'd like more people to go over what you make the effort to put out there then I would suggest that you adapt what you write so a wider audience will read it.

I like what Lance said on writing for the reader...I personally respond to that type of style. If you are posting to have a discussion or to communicate with others then I do feel it would be helpful if you attempt more of a median between what is natural for you and what most people will understand. After all if you were part of a discussion it wouldn't be fruitful to speak or write in another language- you have to find common ground.

Novel writers typically write to a wide audience so their communication style is geared towards that but they still manage to keep their personal style intact. A poet is typically interested in something more esoteric and not as concerned that everyone understand them. They are usually happy with having a select audience grasp the meaning of their words and they usually have less sales too. It's up to you and what you want....do you want the small select audience or the unwashed masses?
