Um . . . breakfast food is my area of expertise. I even have a cookbook with over 365 ways to cook an egg. So when I saw this OP, I knew we weren’t talking breakfast toppings. Despoite the common American view of the Belgian waffle as breakfast food, is NOT always served at breakfast. It is often served as dessert. I think it is important to focus on “dessert toppings”, otherwise we are comparing apples and oranges. I reject all your pancake style toppings and remind you that this waffle is NOT made from pancake batter! Belgian waffles are a lighter batter and the higher grid would cause grossly copious quantities of sugary breakfast syrup or butter to be trapped in those large, square, deep pockets. . . aaack! Those deep pockets hold many delicious treats like, walnuts with caramel sauce drizzled over them. When I think of Belgian waffle toppings, things like, truffles, Grand Marnier and the wide variety of liquor, candy and fruit toppings come to mind . . . not breakfast toppings.
