Hello, does anyone else out there make corsets ?

I've made one mock up. I've also converted the bodice of an old Scott McClintock evening gown into a corset, though I think it needs more bones in it. I've found this website to be fairly reasonable, also. I did discover that you shouldn't get those patterns that were redrawn from old patterns, particularly if you're trying to use one of the other sizes that they're drawn for. They should only be used with the smallest size on there. There's too much variation to be accounted for that isn't in the pattern cut.

Lady P.. thanks for that link.... I'd missed that thread...

No problem at all, GT.  I hope it will be of some use to you.

But there is a difference between corsets, you must define what type you are after, fashion every day dress type attire, or the boned tight lacing variety. Some links from my bookmarks ;

Thanks for the tip on redrawn old patterns, saved me the expense and pain in the ass. I've been looking for different patterns (I'm bored with what I have). Does anyone do leather corsets ? Getting ready to try those, could use any and all tips.                                                                                                                                                                                                       Mentored by Touch of Kink

Yeah, found out the hard way. You can find some nice corset patterns at your local fabric store. Simplicity has a few, as well as McCalls. Vogue probably does, too. Once you've made a few from some standard patterns like those, there are several books out on corsetry that show you how to take measurements and so on and so forth, should you wish to endeavor to startdesigning your own. However, it's called corset BUILDING for a reason. It's a very complicated process and requires lots of minute details.

barracudakitten -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 10:59:23 AM)

I've used all the patterns I've found from Simplicity and McCalls. I bought The Basics of Corset Making  by Linda Sparks. Great help.AlsoThe Little Corset Book  by Bonnie Holt Ambrose. Would likeWaisted Efforts    Ouch ! $184 new

DarlingSavage -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 11:05:07 AM)

I got The Little Corset Book! Isn't that just adorable? Waisted Efforts can be found for a hell of a lot less than that! I know! I have it and I paid about $56 here. $184 is ridiculous, but I've seen that price, too. Somebody's really making a killing on that book and I don't think it's the author.

barracudakitten -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 11:41:03 AM)

Hate it when people scam others at the expense of someone else. Yes, I loved it. Too bad the patterns are for mice!LOL ! I'll have to keep looking for Waisted Efforts. Someone here told me to haunt used book stores.                                                                                                                                                                    Mentored by Touch of Kink

barracudakitten -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 11:45:10 AM)

I'm doing both. I've found everyone wants me to make them for them. Thanks so much for the sites. Will check out                Mentored by Touch of Kink

DarlingSavage -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 12:05:41 PM)

I think that $56 is about the cheapest you're going to be able to find that book. Every so often, someone will have it on Amazon for about $48, though.

I saw another book on there that I wanted also.

barracudakitten -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 12:24:17 PM)

Which one? My sewing is varied. It's not All kink-fetish wear. Got the vanilla to do too!

Corests: Historical Patterns & Techniques

This one looks pretty cute, too. But I'd like to see what they have to offer other than a cute title.

Domiknitrix: Whip Your Knitting into Shape

barracudakitten -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 12:41:27 PM)

Knitting is one thing I haven't tried yet.                                                                       Mentored by Touch of Kink

DarlingSavage -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 1:30:33 PM)

It's pretty easy, except for the guage thing. I've only made scarves, blankets, and hats. I'm sure it's harder for making sweaters and stuff, because of the stitch guaging issue. Some people think that knitting moves along more quickly than crochet.

GreedyTop -> RE: Corsets (2/17/2010 10:39:21 PM)

ooh..love the new pic, DS!!

DarlingSavage -> RE: Corsets (2/18/2010 3:16:37 AM)

Thank you!
