Hillwilliam -> Lady Gaga (2/16/2010 8:46:03 AM)

I was channel surfing last night and came upon a multi hour "Lady Gaga" extravaganze.  It was like a train wreck, had to watch a few minutes of it and I was wondering.  "Where did this thing come from?" then it hit Me.

20 some years ago, Madonna and Marilyn Manson had a love child.  Im not sure which one gave birth tho.

who agrees? LOL

I'm still trying to determine the gender....I know there have been interviews and it was stated she is a she...but I'm just not convinced.

And I like Manson's songs.  One thing I noticed, though, is that her body language and His are VERY similar.  Watch her and then watch the video "The Dope Show".

I don't have an opinion about her music (pretty much everything on modern mainstream top 40s blurs together for me) but her image is an extremely successful hybrid between Donatella Versace and early to mid 70s Vivienne Westwood.  So points for that, I guess.

As an aside, I do find it entertaining when prepackaged pop stars include songs about being hassled by paparazzi on their debut albums.  It reminds me of watching the WWF when I was a kid and being amused that a wrestler making his "very first appearance anywhere" already had a number of sworn, lifelong, archenemies among the ranks of the current wrestlers.  There are innumerable unsettling parallels between the mic skills of mid 80s wrestling superstars and the self-aggrandizing vanity tracks from post-modern plastic divas.

Actually the only thing that I really know about her is that she dresses very strangely.  I only know this because I see pics with captions on the LOL sites.

Lady Gaga is the epitome in postmodern pop culture. Discuss.

Lady Gaga is awesome!  She's actually very talented and attended a prestigious school for the performing arts.  She's definitely got a thing for wild costumes, but so did a lot of artists like KISS, David Bowie, and every hair band of the 80s.

(And ftr, Paparazzi isn't about about the paparazzi chasing her, it's about an obsessed woman chasing a guy she wants like the paparazzi chase stars.  It's a clever analogy, really.)

paisleypower -> RE: Lady Gaga (2/16/2010 3:46:51 PM)

I think Madonna (circa Material Girl) and Jay Z (circa Life and Times and The Black Album) were probably the peak of postmodern pop culture, in the sense of being self-aware, self-referential, and openly contemptuous of the same consumerism they glamorized.  Jay Z also popularized the postmodern pop music pastiche, especially in his diss tracks against Nas where he sampled Nas's own voice extensively and effectively.  I think the last wave of Divas that we're living in now are effectively collages cobbled together out of the shattered remnants of the plastic American culture.

What is on my face as I type this is either a smirk or the serene smile of enlightenment.

I like her. Heck, her videos are kinda hawt! She may dress odd, but some of her outfits are pretty dayumed slutty. [:D]

nigelthefreak -> RE: Lady Gaga (2/16/2010 9:28:24 PM)

I think she is doing exactly what mayrilyn manson did in the late 90's, she is using shock value to keep her talked about in the media aside with releasing as many songs as humanly possible per year to keep her fresh in the minds of the sheep who are flocking to get her music becuase she is all over the media. It's brilliant really when you realise in a few years everyone will be saying lady who? Her money will be made and probably most of it spent by the time anyone even realises she is forgotten.
