It's interesting to see how upset people can get by this topic.

I see a lot of people who seem to like to post a "shopping list of deal breakers and requirements" in thier profiles.

Where do you think this comes from?

Knowing what one wants/doesn't want.

Is it something that actually works?

Yes, as it qualifies those they are communicating with, and disqualifies those they have no interest in.

Sure, but what if someone who would otherwise be ideal sees something like that-and decides they don't like that kind of overt pressure? And you filter the wrong thing out?

Can anyone else here see a Dominant deciding that a woman has a tendency to "top from the bottom" by doing this sort of thing?

This really is quite simple. If you don't like the profile, don't respond. There's plenty of others who will respond to her who don't feel that because she has requirements and desires that she's topping from the bottom.
How can one top from the bottom when they're just getting to know each other to see if there's anything even in common to go any further than that? She's not your slave at that point. She's just another human being on this great big planet earth. It's a wise thing to remember.

It would be really, really wise to remember- or perhaps, learn- judging from the amount of offensive mail I get from men who aren't happy with my lack of interest.

Really? I didn't see one upset person. I saw people give you their opinion. Methinks you are projecting just a tad. ;-)

I guess we aren't living up to your fantasy of getting all up in arms over your relatively tame thread OP!

You care about lists on profiles?  Seriously?  I've dated women I was "too old" for, "too short" for, "too far away" for, you name it.  I wrote them, said why they interested me, was clear that I had read their profile and recognized I was outside one of their criteria, and started conversations with them anyway.

Most people don't change their profile every five minutes.  They write down some words when they are in a particular mood, and hopefully it is more or less representative.  Profiles are almost irrelevant to me, to be honest.  I have seen some beautiful profiles written by fools, and perhaps the smartest women I have dated off CM had profiles that were max 5 lines long.  (Smartest meaning Ph.D., self-made business woman, professional translator.)  The translator literally had no profile, just a phenomenal username.  I wrote her to compliment her on it, and we started talking on the phone for two hours a day, and then met in real.

Interaction matters.  Profiles pretty much don't.

I don't agree. How could it be physically feasible to get to the point of significant interaction with everyone who writes you? That would be impossible. You have to whittle down your emails. The person would have to stand out before you'd begin to get to know them.

And what is a profile made for then? A person isn't even known to exist to you except for their profile.

What RedMagic1 isn't telling you here is that he's quite eloquent and charming. And he actually knows how to talk to women, approaching them respect.

If he's interested in her, he'll know how to approach her.

Who is upset? Since when did stating an opinion be construed as being upset? It is not the topic that is annoying, it was your statements made on how horrific it is that women DARE to have preferences and then to throw in the "topping from below" crap.

Just because someone answers you assertively, does not mean they are upset, it means they have a strong opinion...or is that not allowed either in subville?

CelticNightmare -> RE: The shopping list. (2/16/2010 6:21:41 PM)

I do respect what people express in profiles. Some are interesting-some are repellent-others are just sort of nuetral. I just read things at times that make me wonder...where did THAT come from?

And judging by the amount of bitterness expressed therein at times-I know that asking is going to be pretty much futile-nothing I can ask,no matter how polite or kind-is going to get a response.

The judgement has already been made.

CelticNightmare -> RE: The shopping list. (2/16/2010 6:22:42 PM)

You can do as you see fit Red, I respect free will.

I'd like to honestly know why this bothers you so much? I mean, if the profile doesn't appeal to you because of it's content or it's form, why don't you just click that little arrow to see the next one? I'm not trying to be sarcastic here. Honestly, I'm sure your experience here would be just a wee bit more pleasant for it.

Fine, and you are free to post whatever you like as well.

I am confused as to why you think that NOTHING you write will garner a reply if you write someone where you do not fit some of their critera.

I get emails all the time and if they are not rude, I reply to everyone. The problem is not that someone does not fit a criteria or two, it is when you try to be courteous and say no thanks, then the guy comes back with some nasty comment since he is rejected.

This is why so many men post that no one ever replies and how we are all fakes. They did it to themselves, by not taking no graciously.

It's funny, you know. I was just thinking.... "wow it's interesting how argumentative that Celtic dude is."

It must be some sort of fetish-kudos.

Oh, thank the heavens.  I was afraid for a moment that you did not respect free will, and I was going to have to stop doing as I saw fit.  Whew.  That was close.

PrincessDonna -> RE: The shopping list. (2/16/2010 6:29:13 PM)

I think it lets someone know right away this is what I'm into and this is what I'm not into so the person reading the profile can take it from there,no big deal.In the future my ideals may change and at that time so will my profile.

What if the list is created purely out of fantasy though?

Many times you can tell if the lists are realistic, rooted in fantasy, or just somebody with a stick up their ass.

slavekal -> RE: The shopping list. (2/16/2010 6:30:02 PM)

We all have certain traits that we must have in a partner, and we all have things that are deal breakers. At some point, if a list gets too long, it becomes unreasonable, but it isn't wrong to have some standards.

Am I Scottish now?  WTF?  Spread some haggis and some Nutella on me, and I'm good to go!

I realized he might have been talking to her.  His presumption at allowing someone to do as they saw fit was more what I was trying to comment on.  Intentional obtuseness for rhetorical effect.
