sirsholly -> a personal weather rant.... (2/17/2010 4:03:18 AM)

Pittsburghs mayor Luke Ravenstahl received help from the National Guard before any other area in Western Pa., even though Pittsburgh was not the hardest hit by the snow that fell Feb 7th (today is the 17th) Because of their presence, the mayor pulled the fire depts from some of their duties to assist with road maintenance. So he had Pghs regular road crews plus the fire dept....

Irregardless of the above: Mr Mayor...where in the fuck were the road crews in this case? Why was that ambulance on its own? Did it occur to you that ONE FUCKING SNOW PLOW...ONE!!!...leading the ambulance in, could have saved this mans life?

Shame on you, Mayor Ravenstahl. I hope you sleep well tonight.

It sounds like there needs to be a serious cleaning out of the powers that be. Starting with the dispatchers that cancelled those calls.

I see a very large settlement against the city in the future.

Holly it snows every year.

It is rather standard for PA.

My advice?    Dont let incompetence get rewarded.   As that invites more.

Snow is a routine- predictable event.  Make noise with in your community.     It works.    ...and don't settle for begging.   insist- and if that doesn't work- run yourself for office.

Wow.

I have NEVER seen Holly rant evah.

Or use the *f* word.

I never want to make her mad.

Ever!!

And yeah, Holly, you're right. It's a damn shame.

About twenty years ago, there was a snow in Denver and the plows were not ready for it.  The mayor was subsequently ousted in a landslide next election.  Ever since, the plows are ready.

Pure, first of all...DON'T blame the calltakers......they put the calls in, the decision to cancel them came from those that were "unable" to reach the victim...not them!

I don't know what happened here.....I have NEVER seen any time when medical crews use the excuse of "we can't get there".....and I grew up in Upstate NY in the lake effect snow belt along Lake Ontario.  During some of the worst storms on record, the emergency crews have always done whatever they needed to do to get help to someone.  I personally know of numerous incidents where the EMT's/FD/PD personnel WALKED to locations because they were impassible by vehicle.  I've know times when agencies recruited snowmobiles, 4WD vehicles and other equipment from civilians.....I've known of many times when CIVILIANS have donated their own equipment for use to police departments.

With all the technology that's out there today, weather warnings are released a lot sooner than they used to be.  I can count on one hand the number of times that our tiny little village street department was unable to get out and clear the roads and streets.  My best friend's dad worked as the supervisor for the street department in our village....there were times when she wouldn't see him for days.....they'd nap in their trucks, get food when they could, but our roads were clear.  There is absolutely no reason why snow crews in cities should not be prepared......in my day, it didn't take weeks to get streets open again....even in the larger cities in the lake effect snow belts.....hell, half the time, we wouldn't even come close to depleting our supply of snow days for school.

And Holly's right....they should have taken a plow down those streets at least once......for this very reason......someone needs to overhaul those in charge that made the decision to ignore this man's plea for help.  I know it's not a cut and dried situation, but someone fucked up here......

We had plows leading us/the one time we couldn't find a house because the snow covering up the mailboxes & the houses too far back to see the #'s, we had someone WADE his way up the driveway in literally waist high snow to check the house # of a potential pt. I say potential because he didn't need us, his son called & couldn't get ahold of him for 10hrs and Dad had a history of heart attacks so of course the son was worried.
Inconceivable that the crew wouldn't try locating the house on foot.

Time to start writing nasty editorials and clogging the mayor's phone lines with complaints.  When government falls down on its obligations to its citizens and its main function is to tax and fine, time to put it back in its place.
