Since im seeing a trend lately on billboard vandalism, i thought it might be good to give these incidents their own thread that could be added too as more and more arise (and i assure you, they will continue).

So, i want to start this out with one i found... and encourage your thoughts.

A man decided to check his answer (being “no”), which caused him to be arrested. Here is his email to the authorities:

On Friday 18th September 2009 at 3.45pm I was confronted with a questionnaire which I understand was lawfully pinned to the wall on London Bridge railway station, platforms 1 and 2, inviting members of the public to participate by ticking the appropriate box.

The question, “Does God Exist”, was very straight forward, and “No” was obviously the correct answer. I was particularly concerned that vulnerable people exposed to the alternative answers of “Yes” and “Probably” were at risk of exploitation by individuals who might attach a set of rules and obligations to those who hope that some super-being will take responsibility for their lives, or intervene in some other way.

I felt the offered answer “Probably”, to be particularly sinister. It was for this reason I chose to engage with the questionnaire and ensure that the correct answer was ticked. As a result of responding to this questionnaire I was arrested by a plain clothes police officer. Two other plain clothes police officers were in attendance. I was informed that I had been seen ticking the correct answer on CCTV.

As I sat caged in the back of the police van I counted 6 police officers who were attending this incident, which was presented to me as being criminal damage. My tick was entirely within the specified “No” box, and the questionnaire was not damaged in any way. Interestingly the arresting police officer spent much of his time ticking similar multiple choice boxes on a questionnaire of his own. I understand that I am required to pay an £80 penalty notice fine, or attend court. I am left with little choice but to ask that this matter be dealt with by the court.

The response from the vandal is worthy of framing. Thanks for sharing.

Im a little lost with your response, Master Thadius. His response was... hmmm... egotistical, in my opinion. He believed his answer was the corect one... and im sure it was, for him. For others, that may not be the correct answer. Then he goes on to bemoan his plight while trying to justify his vandalism.

Thadius -> RE: Billboards. (2/17/2010 8:51:09 AM)

I enjoyed the humor in it. Regardless of his position on the answer. His trying to rationalize why he was defacing property was funny to me.

I could see the same type of reaction from somebody arrested for shooting up that "Miss me yet?" billboard.

now i get it. i found it funny as well... and a bit sad. Then i ran across one more recently, another vandalism...

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2010/02/17/Atheist-billboard-vandalized/UPI-73071266387409/

SACRAMENTO, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A billboard near Sacramento promoting atheism was vandalized by someone depicting atheists as lost, one of the billboard's sponsor said.

The billboard -- one of several posted in the Sacramento area -- originally read: "Are you good without God? Millions are." Someone spray-painted the words "also lost?" beneath "millions are," CBS13 reported Tuesday.

Rachael Harrington of the Sacramento Area Coalition of Reason -- which paid to have the billboards put up -- said the ads are intended to let atheists and agnostics know they are not alone, the TV station said.

"This shows loud and clear just how necessary our message is, because prejudice against people who don't believe in a god remains very real in America," Harrington said.

...................

Now, what struck me as odd is that these kinds of vandalisms have been around for many, many years, from both sides. Yet Harrington believes that the prejudice is all one sided.

Speaking of the Bush billboard, Master Thadius, have you seen the one to impeach Obama?

Attorney Thomas J. Wroblewski said he and his father, Thomas S. Wroblewski, merely are the registered agents for an unnamed company that rented the billboard and are not responsible for its message.

"It is nothing personal for my dad or me," Wroblewski said. "It is a limited liability company that our firm represents. The company chose the location of the billboard and chose the language."
The billboard along U.S. 41 near the Oshkosh Correctional Institution reads "Impeach Obama." The tagline says, "America's small businesses are failing. Help us spread the message."
The sign appeared Thursday and will remain in place for at least six months, at a cost of $1,000 per month. Its message quickly generated national media attention and ignited a firestorm of debate online, often along political lines.

On the same front...

quote:

American humanist billboard vandalized... again.

Washington, D.C -- An individual or individuals have defaced a billboard in Moscow, Idaho… again. The billboard originally read "Millions are good without God" but was partially obscured with blue paint to now read "Millions are good with God". It's the second time the American Humanist Association (AHA)-sponsored billboard has been vandalized in two weeks. In the first instance the word "without" was completely blacked out, after which the AHA quickly replaced the billboard. The advertisement, which was originally placed mid-September, is part of an American Humanist Association advertising campaign to spread awareness about being good without God. It's the third billboard advertisement the organization has displayed in the Moscow area and similar ads have been put up around the country.

I cant condone vandalism on either side. A billboard war might be interesting though. Put one up, then the other side answers with their own just a few feet away. Think of the explosion of money for billboard companies!

Musicmystery -> RE: Billboards. (2/17/2010 9:20:14 AM)

I agree with Thadius.

And I bet the court gets a kick out of it. And fines him.

The questionnaire is in fact leading. For balance, it should add a "Probably Not" option for agnostics.

And for the philosophical, it should define "God" as a person, a concept, a unifying force.......

The thing has an agenda. It was met with a humorous reply, one that was arguably tacitly invited.

Slow day for the bobbies, apparently, but justice served.
