You know it makes sense Although most Americans – according to opinion polls – still rate Dick Cheney alongside Ebola virus in terms of popularity, there's a corner of America that will always love Dick. And that corner was brought together at the CPAC conference in Washington DC, where the former vice president made a "surprise" appearance. To wild applause Dick teased the crowd with a little presidential come-on, saying: "A welcome like that is almost enough to make me want to run for office again." Cue standing ovation. "But I'm not gonna do it." For shame Dick Cheney, your country needs you. On CNN, Wolf Blitzer declared he thought Cheney might run in 2012, assuming the Republicans do well in the 2010 midterm elections in November. And who knows? he might be the only man to stop the Sarah Palin bandwagon from driving the Republican party over off the cliff. So go and register the www.cheney2012.com web address right now. Obviously it would be great for the Democratic party if Cheney did run, one suspects, and the prospect of a Cheney versus Palin Republican primary ... well, it would be like Alien versus Predator, but much better. The Republicans could put Jesus Christ (aka Yeshu Ben Yusuf) up for President and it wouldnt make a difference as long as people chose on the basis of their currently dominant ideas, policies and personalities. They are making the mistake the Tories did over here and have become the "nasty party" as a consequence just the same. Until they rip themselves apart and reconstitute the party on more sane and sensible grounds, they remain unattractive to any except those vulnerable to emotional argument founded on traditional approaches to the world that are long since outdated and outmoded - which is why in turn what are their currently dominant ideas, policies and personalities have been thrown into focus. I've always wondered. Earlier in his career, Cheney absolutely wanted to be President. The turnaround always seemed odd. And Cheney is smart. Not an opponent to underestimate. Or a candidate to trust.

Hasn't the fact that he'd fallen ill towards the end of Bush's career rather queered that for him, though? I dunno if anybody would vote for some old geezer in a wheelchair who looks like he'd die of a stroke at the first fuss when he comes into power.

Obama is an entirely other kettle of fish. Extremely marketable and says all the right things to appeal to the majority, whilst the Reps only seem able to come up with unmarketable candidates who say all the wrong things in order to appeal to a minority. Obama is a disappointment compared to his promise, but then we have to bear in mind that even Jesus Christ would have found it difficult to fulfil the expectations placed, rightly and wrongly, on Obama given the economic disaster he took over. Where we can lay blame on Obama is in his ever more insane desire for bipartisan government when the other side are so clearly bent on obstruction and focussed so totally on the next race. Obama must become a strong, no nonsense President, and drop this bipartisan approach. It is better to be a strong leader even if a bad President than to be a weak leader and a good President. By the former the criticism laid against you is at least well founded, by the latter you get criticised however well you do. E
