ExistentialSteel -> RE: Setting the Bar (3/29/2006 3:53:30 AM)

This woman from NJ came down to see me after we had talked online and on the phone for months. She had sent me what I later found out was a touched-up glamour pic and that was what I thought she looked like. When I went to meet her I looked all around her. I, honestly, could not recognize her. It wasn't that she wasn't pretty, but she damn sure didn't look like that pic. The misconception was nothing I couldn't get by and we ended up having a good relationship for a long time until we both tired of the distance barrier. My point is some well thoughtout pics can deceive while casual snapshots may be more accurate.

In the midst of the neverending whine of "Omg people are so rude" or "Why don't they like me" or "Why do people waste my time by existing if they're not looking to own me" topics..

I'll start my own whine/rant.

I've noticed on several instances.. (I'm not looking for anyone atm mind you) that I've been perusing people's pages and the only pictures they seem to post for people to "notice" (I can only assume they do it with the hope that someone takes notice and wants them) are pictures where they look like they've just survived a tornado? Or just woke up?

Is it just me? Or should there be some effort made to at least comb your hair, if you're looking for someone?

I just finished perusing this one "slave" profile where she whined the entire profile about how people don't find her desirable and all she wants to do is find someone who will love and cherish her..  And her pictures, cept one, all look like she doesn't own a comb/brush, she just woke up, or she took the picture right after spending the entire day cleaning out the garage on her knees.

For me.. should I be looking.. there is a minimum level of "Ability to care for oneself" that I expect. If someone's pictures do not show me that they have at least some ability to care for themselves or show some modicum of self-loving, then I just can't even feign interest.

Any one else's thoughts?

I would say that outside of basic neatness and cleanliness, be very careful about how you stereotype and assess folks based on their clothes and surroundings.

One person may wearing a ball cap, Nike turtleneck, some 501's, running shoes and ten thousand dollar watch, leaning against an old truck, while the other is standing beside brand new SUV wearing a cheap suit and a pair of oxfords they purchased at Penney's for 179.99.

How can you determine which one is more desirable and who has better taste/more class, based on some crummy pictures and few generalizations here on collarme?

I'd read their words, hear their voice, get to know the person and use your intuition before making any suppositions.

Personally I think pictures reflect quite a bit about ourselves.  My biggest pet peeve is a dirty background and glamour shots (I think they just end up not looking at all like the actual person).  I remember once looking at a persons profile (who had a dominant) that had a series of elaborate “slave positions” and she was demonstrating them in a dirty background.  My thought was:  you have enough fucking time to take pretty pictures of yourself in meaningless poses, but you can’t clean your dominants house?  That says a lot about your value and priorities as a slave.

Regarding messy pictures: Hey! At least it's not yet another picture of a penis ;)

Yes.  Put your own photos up before complaining about anyone else's.

Or, more acurately and properly (if they were a live-in slave, particularly if theirs is a Gorean based relationship)... the values and priorities of the Owner.

By virtue of who they have chosen to be enslaved with it also shows the values of the slave.
