Better the feeling, more the silence.

YIKES!  What could you possibly hope to accomplish other than have some staged idiot start a fistfight with you?

I tried being opened, cost me a job I loved. Now, I keep my private life private. It's no one's business but those it directly effects.

ivorylace -> RE: being true to who you are? (3/29/2006 4:05:03 AM)

I agree with most here, the choice is ours.

Though most around me know my choice, I still choose who to tell, when to tell, and just how much to tell.

Be true to who you are, let the world make their own decisions.

Helllllllllllllll, noooooooooooooooooooo. I'm not about to out myself at work or to my vanilla friends and family. It doesn't mean I wear a disguise if I'm around others into BDSM, but I don't shout from the rooftops. I also know some in jobs that have morals' clauses saying they can't behave in ways that many of us do. Anyone see the movie, Twisted?

i have been told that im not being true to who i am because ...<snip>
i have my own reasons for this if other people want to shout there lifestyle from the roof tops i respect and admire them for that. what are your veiws on it do you feel that once you make the desision to live a certin way you have an obligation to tell the world or do you feel that your choices are just that your choice?

Hmmmmm I'd say that...
IF you told people who you know would be upset at the knowledge ..
IF you told them even though you felt it would disrespect them..
IF you overrode your reasons for keeping private...
IF you took it public when you are a private person ....
THEN and only then would you NOT be true to yourself.

Don't let anybody coerce you otherwise.

dorsaisgirl1 -> RE: being true to who you are? (3/29/2006 9:16:29 AM)

This is a question, to me, that's not just about what i want, but what is respectful of others as well. i find no benefit whatsoever in flaunting something in front of someone who feels offended by it. What pupose does that serve - so i can have the satisfaction of saying this is me?

Parts of my nature as a submissive are consideration and respect. These don't stop because my Master's not present, but extend into all aspects of my life and all relationships. Seeking what makes others comfortable and pleased is what i seek, not proving that i have rights. So i am being very true to myself because these are the qualities i value and wish to express.

I have to agree with this. I have never or at least not yet, run into anyone who said you have to tell everyone so you are true to who you are. It isn't necessary. We know our family, friends, employers and it's all on a need to know basis. It can also be they don't need to know. It's all about choices. Why start problems..

I personally think<-- Argh here I go again LOL...
Whether you tell anyone about who you are is your decision & yours alone...
I also think that anyone who decrees that you have to tell anyone your Lifestyle choices
is an asshole & deserves a good swift kick in the Crotch!!!
Of Course that's My opinion & I could be Wr Wr Wr Wr Wr Oh that word...
But I'm Not!!!

slavejali -> RE: being true to who you are? (3/29/2006 1:04:24 PM)

I'm with most of the posts already made.

To me, my Master/slave relationship is about the intimate details of my relationship with my partner, its no one elses business...also Ive got not desire to freak people out who have no idea about this type of relationship.

I'm totally open around everyone with how I act with Master. Its very noticeable that I jump to his every command, dont argue with him, treat him like he is the center of my universe. People do notice that kinda stuff. Now if I got into a conversation with a vanilla friend about the workings of relationship I would feel entirely free talking about how I see my partner as my God *grin* and I treat him as such. I would even go so far as to describe how I love the old fashioned role of a woman submitting to her husband.  I wouldnt have to use words they dont understand, I would use words they can relate to. (When in France I speak French kinda thing.).

To be true to yourself has nothing to do with what information you reveal about yourself to others, or the words you choose in what you do reveal.

PenelopePitstop -> RE: being true to who you are? (3/29/2006 2:24:13 PM)

In my experience (which admittedly is limited) those who declare  who andwhat they are from the rooftops are desperate reaction-seekers. Whether the reaction they seek is something that will affirm them and give them comfort, or if it's just another form of attention-seeking, I don't know.

IceyOne -> RE: being true to who you are? (3/29/2006 3:33:08 PM)

Your choices are just that; YOURS. There is no law that says you have to tell anyone. Just go with what feels right to you.

artglfr -> RE: being true to who you are? (3/29/2006 3:40:09 PM)

Safe, Sane and Consensual are always good to keep in mind and not just for Kink. I do not feel it is consensual for  Me to make people who are absolutely appalled by the very thought of My Lifestyle have it rubbed in their face. Why bum them out over something that will only hurt them and have NO benefit to me at all?

Jerry Springer's show isn't about education it's about exploitation.  _I_ wouldn't go on Jerry's show, not because I'm not being true to myself but because Jerry Springer panders to the worst in human nature.  It's a no-class operation and I'm not a no-class kind of person.

A legitimate program would be a different thing.  I don't care who knows about my lifestyle, I'm out.  I flag _EVERYWHERE_.  I have a BDSM symbol tattooed on my left arm, I have a Leather Pride Flag on my car, I have a mini-flogger keychain I wear on my left hip, I often wear a handcuff earring in my left ear... If you know what to look for you know exactly what I am. If you are curious enough to ask, I am honest enough to answer.  My kids are both adults, screw Family Court, I don't care who knows.

But going on shows that specializes in trailer park and ghetto trash,  I don't know who the father of my baby is, I cheated on my wife with her sister, guess who's a man and who's a woman, my family secret is that I'm my own sister's uncle, I cheated on my boyfriend with my step-brother, etc. ? ? ?   Oh HELL no...

I have more self respect than that.  It's got nothing to do with being true to myself, it's about having a little bit of class.

YIK,
- Geoff
I was NOT trailer trash... I lived in a double-wide!
