So I guess they do not call themselves African Americans... although technically I suppose it would be okay, since they do live in North America... Like in South America they call both Canadians and US citizens Norte Americanos

Perhaps, but then you have those of African descent who have always lived in Africa, and those who have always lived in Europe, and many other places.

I do not see this as a huge thing... if you noticed in the article I posted from wiki, they have worked out what they want to call themselves

I take people as being human beings, get to know them, and then if it is of any importance or the subject comes up I ask them what their label is... it is just easier this way. I do not like labeling others for the most part, I prefer to refer to people the way they ask to be referred to... just me, etc.

I agree - as a matter of simple logic, it's bizarre to call people in that category "African Americans". However, I think it's purely up to them to decide how much the issue matters to them, and whether they want to try to persuade the powers that hold sway here at CollarMe to provide an alternative term.

Technically, if one was Canadian of African descent they would then also be African American, since Canada is part of the America's just as Brazil might be, though they are on the southern part of this continent. As for African-African, or African-European, African-Dutch, ect.. beats me why they would have no alternative but to list the American continent as part of their heritage, unless it was the politically correct choice because the CM site originated in the America's. Seems like since CM has grown there should be a consensus to change that.

I mean, are we to believe there is something insulting about just being "African", that we have to add "American" to make it acceptable?

We are one of the of the few places that does this... and it is not as if we are ashamed of our roots that we do it, it is actually a statement of pride in them...

I'm not sure I see how requiring a Canadian of African descent to select "African American" represents a "statement of pride" in his or her "roots".

So why are you happy with the profile insisting that you come from the Caucasian hills in Africa? Isn't that as much of an issue as the whole African American thing?

This came up in another prior thread.

The timing to bring it  up again is not good- as some are very upset over the Compton Cookout.

Well yes PA, it was such a random and stupid post afterall and how dare you set up caring loving good liberal people by pointing that The Compton Cook-Out was run by a Jigaboo!
