Coming from the rather small and insignifigant country of New Zealand, I was very confused by all these Americans that would blithely proclaim themselves "Irish" or "Swiss" or "African". For a while I thought they were all immigrants and had been in the country for a long time. I finally asked one why she did that, and she told me that it was a pride in ancestry thing. Well - ok, but what is wrong with just being a kiwi or an American or a Brit? My family came from Ireland and England, and now i am in America and have a couple of Americans that have my genes. Does that make them Irishenglishnewzealand- American? That doesn't even address the fact that the Irish part of my ancestry were Picts. I'm happy to be a kiwi, and my kids are happy to be American/New Zealanders - depending on what country they are in, because they have dual citizenship.[:)]

The point I made (which Kittin also mentioned) is that this is a regional term as well, just as much as African American. Nobody has their knickers in a twist over that one, though, with the possible exception of Peter Tosh (and anybody else who buys that whole Yakub story...)

When presented with a list of human 'types' on forms, I always tick 'other' for the reason that Caucasian does not fit neither does White and I am particularly interested why forms select almost every large region of the world where people come from, as if it is of so much importance, then add 'other' at the end as if it is no importance. I understand selecting a 'type' of human might be useful for tailoring resources for certain communities, basically what is given as the reason for requesting 'type', but I believe why should one group or a few groups be selected for better service than other groups, surely all should receive the same as there is no difference in us apart from our current colour, place of birth and language. But, I suspect this asking for ethnicity has racial segregation overtones, something from a less enlightened past and what does it matter what a person is as long as the bloody taxes are being paid. Having a selection of racial types at an authority's disposal can only lead to generalisation, the belittlement based on once common thought yet another thing from the dark past.

Just a quick note the Caucasus Mountains are not in Africa but in Europe, they are generally deemed as the line between Europe and Asia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasus twisted

Let's say you have a continent, let's say it is Africa. Each of the countries calls themselves by the countries name. We are Egyptians, Ghanians, Liberians blah blah blah. Say there is one country. This one country is called the United States of Africa. This country pumps it's ever-lovin fist in the air. "Proud to be an African, best damn country in the world. We are Africans." There is a discrepancy most folks from that continent can see but the USof Africa on the whole does not. They consider themselves to be the true Africans, the only Africans, the only ones to hold the title. Uh, I dont think so. South Central North America--all America. As far as blacks with African roots here in Canada, (the land of no black people yeah right) consider the Underground Railroad. Then in later years consider the Foreign Exchange Student for example, we have hosts and hosts of people directly from Africa. They find love here, get married have wee ones... Ethnocentricity is what it is and in some cases it is just that someone looking at their navel and thinking they are the epicenter of it all in many more ways than they ever really are.

So to show pride in one's heritage, people started creating hyphenated designations: African-American for one. However, a lot of us are not American, nor do we subscribe to the melting pot paradigm.
