Aneirin -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/23/2010 3:17:34 AM)

There is a worrying trend for people in this world to go looking for anything with the potential to harm, something that comes from the law suit mentality where it has become necessary to risk assess literally anything to avoid the possibility of being sued for common everyday mishaps. The notion that someone is always to blame for anything and therefore must pay up. The reality of this situation is the lawyers get rich and the rest of us have individuals running around looking for danger in everything without actually understanding that eventually life itself will kill us, but there must always be something to blame, we live in a blame society, which is something we use to push responsibility away from ourselves.

This will all start to reverse back to normality when someone in respected legal professionalism starts a movement  to say, hey, shit like life  happens and no one is to blame, it's simply just life and no one ever said it was going to be easy so just get on with it and be careful. But it won't happen, whilst for every case an uncaring outsider is getting wealthy on other's misfortunes.

But as regards to hot dogs, according to Wiki, ewwwwww ;

...............A hot dog (also known as a frankfurter, frank, wiener, or weenie) is a moist sausage of soft, even texture and flavor, often made from advanced meat recovery or  meat slurry.....................

No wonder my cat walks away when I try to drop them in her bowl, she has more sense !!!

LaTigresse, why are you bring RACE into this, it is a case of poor parenting not race. I do agree with the rest that we have to be responsible for ourselves and our families and keep the goverment and the do gooder people out of these things. Be responsible adults and watch your children.

Because I am not worried about being PC. Because I was born and raised 'poor white trash' with a touch of 'crazy hippy granola' tossed in for good measure, and because I have an obnoxious sense of humour about it. If it worries you so much, please feel free to get your tighty whities in a bunch over it. Do not expect me to follow suit.

It is poor parenting to give a child a food that is a choking hazard. Hot dogs, grapes, jelly beans, cherries, carrots, etc.

So the hot dog is redesigned...then what? Who is going to convince Mother Nature to change the shape of a grape?

Perhaps the solution is common sense and a little effort on the part of the parent/caregiver? It is easy to toss Jr a bag of grapes and tell him to go watch that sumbitch, Barney. It takes TIME (wa? 30 seconds?) and EFFORT (stand up and get a knife) to cut the grapes in half, but that effort can eliminate the danger. The same with a hot dog....split the silly thing and the danger is nearly gone.

Why should the manufactures of "choking hazards" be responsible for doing the job of the parents?

And for the love of heaven.....kids choke. So do adults. The American Red Cross offers classes in CPR at no cost in most areas. Personally i think it should be mandatory for new parents to take a class before they take the baby home from the hospital.

BoiJen -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/23/2010 4:36:54 AM)

Hotdogs present a clear possibility as a choking hazard for the same reason peanut butter sandwiches do...people aren't chewing their damned food. Teach you kids to actually chew their food before attempting to swallow and this wouldn't be an issue. Parents aren't teaching their children to slow down and actually east their food instead of inhaling it.

Proper table manners save lives!

boi

PS. As of 2003 peanut butter was the primary choking offender because bread would clump up create a plug when the food wasn't chewed enough to be swallowed with ease.

Thank you Aneirin. You hit the nail right on the head.

We seem to live in a sort of 'age of convenience' where people often seem to be looking for the easy way out and taking the path of least resistance even if it means giving up control of one's mind. These are the times of the short term return, where it's always someone else's fault or responsibility where people very rarely take responsibility for their own actions and decisions and less so, admit to ever being wrong or being at fault.

You would be forgiven for thinking that we have become a society of imbeciles, unable to comprehend anything which doesn't directly affect us.

Redesigning the hot dog is going to be very difficult indeed, not just because you can choke on just about anything regardless of its size or shape but also because you cannot ever hope to prevent instances of human stupidity.

Seems to me that is what LaT was saying without mincing her words or being PC about it.

I think the worst genes were weeded out a long time ago. "The crawl away and hug a dire wolf" ones were the first to go.

They are kids, that in a perfect world, would have parents that are intelligent enough to figure this shit out on their own.

Every time I would like to think that, I see prime examples that they still breed like rabbits. Saw a few standing at the bus stop when I drove past on my way to work this morning.

I'm going to ask, did you read the article at all? Do you know why children choke on food? It's because they don't chew the food. These doctors are trying to sound like they're the shit because they're trying to help the dumb ones breed.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that you need to chew you food before attempting to swallow cuz otherwise you might choke. Hell, my three year old cousin know it!

boi

Bacon?!

And in a perfect world...ALL parents would be perfect and raise perfectly well behaved and conscientious children who grew up to be perfect adults. And we all know that ain't gonna happen.

Domin8tingUrDrmz -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/23/2010 6:30:50 PM)

Since most hot dogs and sausages are stuffed inside animal intestines, it's gonna be rather difficult to change their shape.  Unless somehow, engineers manage to miraculously change the shape of animal intestines.

I make sausages, hot dogs, bacon, beer, and a bunch of other cured meats.  While I don't currently sell any of this stuff in a grocery store, the possibility does exist.  If I am required to put a safety label on some of these products it will read:

WARNING:  Stupid people should NOT breed.

Do you think the FDA will find that sufficient?
