I was going through some of my stuff this morning and was reminded that I used to participate in Bookcrossing.com.  At first, I thought it would be a cool and generous way to connect to people.  As time went on, it became clear that people liked free books (there was a designated drop-off spot at a coffee shop on Missoula), but not commenting on them after they were read.   In fact, after almost ten years, of the two dozen books that I "released into the wild", I had only two comments- both from books that I'd read for the feminist book club that I was participating in at the time.

Does anyone else here have any experience with Bookcrossing.com?

It sounded like a good idea... but they never seem to have any books that I'd bother to read laying around my area..

I did notice that my own book got an absolutely hateful review from some silly little goth girl on a bookcrossing site who thought it wasn't a proper vampire story because the vampires weren't whining ponces in frilly shirts and black lipstick. That rather cooled me on the notion, for some reason, though I'm not sure why. (It's the only bad review of the book I've seen, as a matter of fact.)

A friend of mine sent me a link to this site and I went ahead and joined but I have yet to "release" any books according to the site's way of doing it.
I usually just give my used books to either the thrift store, friends or I leave them in public places with little sticky notes attached that say "Take Me Home and Read Me."

Well, I was trying to do something else and actually make them frightening instead of a fantasy figure for slightly dim fang hags who want a vampire that looks just like the singer out of HIM to ravish them. I think the girl who put the boot in prefers nonsense like Twillight.
Really, there's only been three or four half decent vampire novels since I Am Legend, haven't there? Even Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's stuff tends towards the romance side of things.
