Nicely done, Sanity.  There seemed to be an effort to shift the goalposts, but it sucked,

Look at the breakdown, though.

Group 1, labeled "Conservative," includes people describing their political views as "very conservative/conservative"

Group 2, labeled "Moderate," includes people describing their political views as "moderate/liberal"

Group 3, labeled "Liberal," included only people describing their political views as "very liberal"

So with 40% in the "Conservative" group, and the "Liberals" split between the 56% percent for the moderate/liberal groups, this chart doesn't actually tell how many "liberal/very liberal" or how many "moderates"

I'd be curious to know the real data, not the doctored version.

I understand the mods have decided to let us all play like adults, and I applaude that change in policy.....but isn't the prohibition against thread hijacking still in place?
Can't we get a little help here? Some of us adults would like to get back to insulting each others ideology.

Is it thread jacking to respond directly to a post?
You seem to feel pretty comfortable saying "fuck you" to people on the boards but when someone ask you to substantiate a position you have taken you want the mods to come and protect you from having to answer difficult questions.

Yes Thompson you responded to one statenment made in a larger context of a post(which was an attempt to answer the question posed by the OP)....you used that benign statement to take us all off on one of your oh so predictable anti- american "imperialism" rants....Have you made your point yet.Can we now return to the OP's question. And why,if this was just your well meaning way of contributing can't you take the sugesstion to start your own thread dealing with your favorite(and only) subject?
And oh yeah.....Fuck You!

Thanks....so few are insightful enough to notice :)
edited to insert the word insightful in place of intelligent....because it makes more sense......in addition referring to Thompson as "intelligent" just rubbed me the wrong way!
come to think of it I'm not real comfortable labeling him insightful either....oh well dammed either way I go.

I looked up Sanity's chart--here's the web site and more information following that chart.

It shows what makes more sense--that most people are moderates, and that the trend is toward more polarization--which is what the study actually concluded.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/120857/conservatives-single-largest-ideological-group.aspx

To measure political ideology, Gallup asks Americans to say whether their political views are very conservative, conservative, moderate, liberal, or very liberal. As has been the case each year since 1992, very few Americans define themselves at the extremes of the political spectrum. Just 9% call themselves "very conservative" and 5% "very liberal." The vast majority of self-described liberals and conservatives identify with the unmodified form of their chosen label.

Party-Based Ideology

There is an important distinction in the respective ideological compositions of the Republican and Democratic Parties. While a solid majority of Republicans are on the same page -- 73% call themselves conservative -- Democrats are more of a mixture. The major division among Democrats is between self-defined moderates (40%) and liberals (38%). However, an additional 22% of Democrats consider themselves conservative, much higher than the 3% of Republicans identifying as liberal.

True to their nonpartisan tendencies, close to half of political independents -- 45% -- describe their political views as "moderate." Among the rest, the balance of views is tilted more heavily to the right than to the left: 34% are conservative, while 20% are liberal.

Gallup trends show a slight increase since 2008 in the percentages of all three party groups calling themselves "conservative," which accounts for the three percentage-point increase among the public at large.

Thus far in 2009, Gallup has found an average of 36% of Americans considering themselves Democratic, 28% Republican, and 37% independent. When independents are pressed to say which party they lean toward, 51% of Americans identify as Democrats, 39% as Republicans, and only 9% as pure independents.

Ideological tendencies by leaned party affiliation are very similar to those of straight partisan groups. However, it is worth noting the views of pure independents -- a group usually too small to analyze in individual surveys but potentially important in deciding elections. Exactly half of pure independents describe their views as moderate, 30% say they are conservative, and 17% liberal.

Bottom Line

While these figures have shown little change over the past decade, the nation appears to be slightly more polarized than it was in the early 1990s. Compared with the 1992-1994 period, the percentage of moderates has declined from 42% to 35%, while the percentages of conservatives and liberals are up slightly -- from 38% to 40% for conservatives and a larger 17% to 21% movement for liberals.

[That's why the subheading is "Percentage of “liberals” higher this decade than in early ’90s"]

Its also interesting to look at people's attitudes once you get past "brand identification" like "conservative", "liberal" or whatever.

For instance, even people who call themselves "conservative" tend to favor keeping Social Security, keeping Medicare and so on.

I think most in here have seen that poll conducted at CPAC where conservatives were asked what progams in government they would want to cut, and out of almost all programs outside of foreign aid only 10% wanted to see them cut. In other words, conservatives don't really want to cut much of anything.

Most of the screaming is not over policy and specific ideas, but mostly culture and tribal affiliation.

Great observation, Rich. Looking at the goal posts now, from here all a guy can see are assholes and elbows as they're struggling mightily to try to get them to budge a little, even if just one inch.

Ok.  How about this;  when we bring the slavegirl out of the Harry Potter room, she will be required to do all sorts of things.

I think there is something to found in the margins, Muse.  Almost twice as many people identify on the conservative side of "very," 9% - 5%.  That's worth noting.  Same thing with the split on specifically "conservative/liberal" at 31% - 16%, though I think the options could have been sliced cleaner.

So now that's settled---what does it show?

Apparently the Democrats are conservative. People vote party these days, though, and the relevant portion is the polarization. It's the Repubs fighting among themselves over who's conservative.

It's interesting too that people will say one thing but hold different positions than their supposed ideology.

Still trying to shift the goal, huh, Muse?  Making it about party affiliation instead of ideological preference?  Let me know how that works out for you in November.

Never mind.  I'll be watching the news myself, that night.

LOL!  Yes, Mike.  It was a figurative comment.  Don't tell me you are going to become a persistently snarking, literalistic bitch now, too, are you?
