Right account now ...

Atlanta Progressive News fires reporter for trying to be objective
February 15, 2010 at 5:16 pm by Andisheh Nouraee in News

Atlanta Progressive News has parted ways with long-serving senior staff writer Jonathan Springston. Apparently, Springston’s affinity for fact-based reporting clashed with Cardinale’s vision.

And, no, that’s not sarcasm.

In an e-mail statement, editor Matthew Cardinale says Springston was asked to leave APN last week “because he held on to the notion that there was an objective reality that could be reported objectively, despite the fact that that was not our editorial policy at Atlanta Progressive News.”

Extracts from APN public statement:

...
We believe there is no such thing as objective news. Typically, mainstream media presents itself as objective but is actually skewed towards promoting the corporate agenda of the ultra-wealthy.

APN, on the other hand, does not pretend to be objective. We believe that our news coverage is fair and that our progressive principles are fair. We aim when possible to give voice to all sides, but aim to provide something different than what is already provided by corporate sources.”

...

Interesting take on the media, and "progressive principles", I think.

Wow.

Here's an area where we definitely agree.

Not the gratuitous "progressive principles" crack, but the statement and situation. Idiots come from all backgrounds.

But a sorry excuse for "journalism," absolutely.

Incredible.

So, ya think he will get a job somewhere?

" Why were you let go?"

"I believe that news can be reported objectively"

"Yes....well..... thank you for stopping by, if you don't hear from us..............."

I don't get it. They have their slant and expect their employees to tow the line. What ever happened to Colmes?

This is why I would rather write porn, than watch the news-what I do makes more sense.

domiguy -> RE: Why much of the print media is tanking? (2/24/2010 5:47:22 PM)

The atlanta progressive news wants to promote their agenda. At least they are wide open and honest that they are not interested in portraying the news in an objective light.

They want health care and blah...blah...blah

The print media is tanking because young people don't subscribe to newspapers, the internet has gutted newspaper revenues from classified advertising, and the American public does not want to pay for news or engage in the practice of reading.

I just forked out $296.00 for my yearly Baltimore Sun subscription because I don't want to see the city's one paper fail. (We used to have three newspapers when I was a child.)

The fourth estate is in bad shape. Who is left to conduct investigative reporting and the gathering of hard news? (Its fucked up enough to think that Disney owns ABC and controls its news desk. The Tribune Company, based outside of Baltimore owns the SUN.)

First the News American folded. Next the Evening Sun folded. After that, The Baltimore SUN closed all its foreign desks: LONDON, MOSCOW, ISREAL, etc. Then it cut staff. Then it downsized the size of the paper. Now, there's barely anything left in it to read.

My hope is that the Washington Post simply expands into BALTO and opens up a local bureau to report on local events.

You're still missing the drivers behind what is happening, and what is happening is not good.

Agreed. That's the story of journalism and the print press now.

I canceled our paper years ago. I was sick of reading the liberal pap from the slanted news staff. There is not one reporter with a conservative viewpoint on the staff of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal. Most papers from other large cities are just the same.

Jeffff -> RE: Why much of the print media is tanking? (2/24/2010 6:57:30 PM)

I read both papers here every day. The Sun-Times, and the Tribune.

Other than the editorial pages, I find the coverage remarkably balanced.

I'm with DG here.  At least they are being direct and honest about who they are and what they do.

This trend has been underway for a long time.  The newspaper that I threw from my bike after school, closed up decades ago.  I think there will always be a market for local news and advertising, but a new model is going to be needed of how it is delivered to the consumers, a bridge between where we are, and the day when everyone is jacked in 24/7.  There is still money to be made, delivering a valuable service, but the dinosaurs don't seem to be evolving very well.
